So i bought and put some sea foam in my transmission today. It was throwing a code for long shift times or something and shifting very hard. Did some reading and figured i would try this. Question is how long or many kms should i drive before i change the fluid again? I did a trans oil change on the car about 5k ago to see if it would help out but no difference.

yea +1 on that. Take it to a shop and get a flush and filter (pay for the flush, may be over 100 total but could save your tranny) then if theres still an issue when you get it back dump some Lucas trans fix in there and start saving your pennys

Well, your situation doesn’t sound good. I hope the Sea Foam works. I did a pretty good search to find an answer for your question; I didn’t find any solid information. I would personally leave it in for 400km minimum; let it do its job. Sea Foam is made to be an additive so it won’t hurt to leave it in, especially since you just changed the fluid.

    Good luck

Thanks, It says on the bottle 8 Km min but that doesn't sound like enough. I just got back from a drive and i was really hard on it and it seems to be better, i hope. I don't believe in trans flushes anymore, had one done on a previous car and it really screwed up my trans. Anyways i guess i will find out.

normally the only time a tranny flush will hurt one is if the trans has never been serviced and your over 75k miles. But if your trans is ready to grenade anyway other then dumping additives in to mask the problem for another month what do you have to loose

Don't flush your tranny bad idea I have only read a few + and a lot of - from flushing a tranny. Not sure how long to leave it in but it cant hurt Sea Foam is a great product and definatly not "masking the problem" my guess is that is made to drag the metal shards from the trans to the filter just a guess but as long as you have a filter it cant hurt.

Trans flushes are fine and should be done. As long as the trans is in workin condition before the flush, it will be fine.

It is total BS and an old myth on not doing them!

    Anyone ever read the can?

I used the Seafoam trans tune recently in a problem car. Can said toss it in, drive around for a little, then remove it. I drove about a week to remove any varnish etc. Then pan dropped, replaced the filter, refilled starting with one quart of Lucas trans stop slip, then the rest regular dex III or whatever the normal non VI is.

Trans is kickin butt so far. Been about 5k miles. Additives aren't an answer for all issues, but sometimes they can help out.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

thank you billboost and toolguy, i work at a shop and probably do 10-12 trans flushes a week with Valvoline Pro flush and additives. NEVER have i had a tranny come back, dont believe everything you read off yahoo questions. Its when you never properly service your trans that ANY sort of proper trans service can harm it, but its not that your doing damage, its that your syrup of trans fluid is whats holding things together.

Yea trans flushes wont hurt anything if its done as regular service but once you wait to long damage is already being done

Now there are a few cars out there that you cant flush and they say not to flush

What was the code? If it was p1811 then you probably have a bad pressure control solenoid. If you're mechanically inclined you can change it in a few hours. It involves dropping the driver side of the cradle and taking the side cover off the tranny. It's like a 20 dollar part i think.

Ya that was the code. Maximum adapt long shift or something. I read on here(?) that sea foam helped, it cleaned the solenoid and the car went for another x amount of miles. That's all i want. I am mechanically inclined as i have my red seal in agriculture, but i am building another grand prix and just need this one to last me a few more months. You are the first person that said it would only take a few hours to change the solenoid though. I have only seen people say it takes a good day for the first time.

As for the trans flushes, My experience has been bad, Bought used car, no idea on trans maintenance if any, fluid was dirty so i figured i would have it flushed, less the 100 km later no go. So i only change oil now. My own personal feeling on it, I don't do them anymore.
