I just bought my 97 GTP and the first mod I want to do is an intake.

I've done some research and found the most popular brands to be the Wizzair, K&N, and the SLP. I've got my eye on the wizzair because I've heard good things of it on this forum too.

Anyone have any experience with these or any input on others? Also the websites say I need to buy another coolant reserve bottle? Does it need to be re-located because of the new box?

    Any input appreciated!

I'll let you make your own decision on the intake as opinion vary wildly on that. Ive made my own, I have a Thrasher intake I believe it is that I never installed, and I currently have a SLP intake installed. I have stuff to make a Fender Well Intake or FWI and that will be going in next when I get the car off jack stands.

With regards to the coolant bottle, you do have to relocate it as far as I know for the '97 model years and there are kits to do that though as I understand it, its pretty straight forward and easy enough to do.

whats the difference with the thrasher and the wizzair? both have the clear boxes which I like - and the 4" intake.

you lookin to sell that thrasher?

I probably will sell it, Ive actually been meaning to, just havent gotten around to posting it up. I'll have to check and make sure everything you need is there. I believe it is, but I want to make sure. Dont let me forget about it.

UR LOSN may be able to give you some tips on what to do with the PCM. Mine didnt come with a tray to hold the PCM. I believe most people just set it on top of the PCM and maybe put some foam material there to have a cushion between the two.

I had made my own PCM tray....out of a paint tray. PCM fits perfectly in it and I am able to form it rather wll. I had used foam between that and the CAI. I will see if I had pics.

Intakes are always a heated topic of debate that is mostly just theoretical speculation. In practice it doesn't make much difference as long as you ditch the stock setup. I have a '98 and it is the same intake wise as a '97. '97-'98s have a horrible stock intake, so anything will be an improvement. You also need to keep in mind that the more aggressive your setup, the more of a difference an aftermarket intake will make. Most people that only mod to a 3.4 pulley don't need a whole lot to feed it adequately. Once you start running 11 seconds in the 1/4 you might need to be more choosy.

I have a Wizaired that is just taking the winter off, but it is a good box. I'm not a fan of the flexible tube and so I am doing something else there. But, you really don't need to spend that much. I always encourage people to do a DIY FWI. You'll get the whole 5hp you can hope to gain from an intake and save a lot of money. For some, aesthetics are important and don't like the DIY feel, so you need to decide what is important to you. Between the Wiz and Thrasher, I've read that the Thrasher's intake tube is smaller than 4" (3.5" I think) while the Wiz has a true 4" tube. Again, probably not going to make a big difference until you are heavily modded.

Yeah you have to deal with the coolant bottle crap. There is no kit per se, you just get from a dealer, or vendor, the GM coolant bottle from a '99+ GP and mount it to the passenger side strut tower.

Thanks for the input guys - I think I will go with your thrasher intake, synthetic. If you want to sell it. How much?

I'll also have to grab a coolant bottle - I saw one for sale on zzp - should I just buy that for $29.99? or should I go to a dealer?

Thanks again - I really hope this adds some power and gas mileage. I'm only getting about 22 mpg and thats even on the hwy!

Urlosin - If you could post some pics that would be awesome, sounds like it works well.

Me personally, I don't think the pre-made intakes are all they are cracked up to be. I saved myself loads of cash and made my own for less than $50, filter included. More money for more mods.

When I first thought about putting it up for sale I was thinking $60 - 70 seemed like a good price. But I need to check that everything is there that you will need.

Alright, I will probably be selling my SLP intake as well whenever I get it pulled off the car as well, but at the moment I do not know when that will be. I suppose if someone wants it that I could be motivated to pull it off the car.

Dang, $30? If that is all you are getting from ZZP, that will probably be close to $40 shipped. I'd call a local dealer because I think you may be able to get a better price.

Okay, here are the pics of the intake:

I took a picture of this so you could see that it is loose here. I had to hold it apart to take the picture, otherwise you cant tell, and I wanted to take a pic of it so you would know. Some super glue for plastic, gorrilla glue, etc and it will not come apart you you could use it just as it is.

Here you can see some bubbling in the plastic where it looks like they used heat to fold over the edge. It came to me this way and was apparently made this way but I wanted you to be aware of it. It does not affect the intake at all, just appearance:

I do not have the hose clamps that would be needed (two of them). It is in decent shape. It was really dusty because I basically got it and it went on a shelf in my garage. So I cleaned it up and took the pics for ya.

For the Thrasher get a Blazer PCM tray, buy an MSP tray off 3800perf, or make your own. I put a Thrasher on my GFs car and made a hold down bracket and put a blanket on the PCM (the type you use for your tools in a craftsmen box). Its out of sight and from what little you can see it looks professional and not rigged. I'm anal about that stuff too...
