IMO, get rid of it and swap in a 3800 and let the real mods begin.

The best one I've seen so far is the "PW" mod. That stands for "paperweight". Pull the motor out and put a 3800 in, preferably a L67. Then you've got a nice paperweight (the 3.1L) for the house and a much better motor in your ride.

Don't laugh. I know a local Corvette collector, has about 25 cars or so, who keeps a 427 in his living room.

We've also got a 3.1L motor forum here at GPF.net
    http://www.grandprixforums.net/f15/

However the base motor in most cars usually doesn't have a lot of support from the aftermarket.

depending on year make model..........milzy motorsports may be able to point you in the right direction as they work on the smaller six cylinder motors and deal with grand am's alot. I am assuming that you are at least talking a SFI motor and not a MPI..........
