Later today I will be heading down the road to being Dex-Cool free in my 2000 GTP! However, in a LOT of the search results here, it talks about removing the front knock sensor to really help to get the old stuff out. I've seen a picture of where the knock sensor is located on GR8racingfool's car, but being that I am now at work and unable to take a peek myself, I was wondering what tool(s) are needed to remove it and if there are any tricks to removing it without it breaking apart like his did. Here is the only reference picture I have (from his post which helps, but doesn't show what the sensor looked like before. Maybe I'm just too much of a visual person...

You will need a 27mm deep socket to get these off. It's not nessary to remove the knock sensors to be able to get all of the coolant out. Your going to have to flush it with ater several times to get all of the old coolant out anyway.

And FWIW I have never seen that happen to any other knock sensor.

I am pretty sure it is 22mm, as I recall using my O2 sensor socket on it. I would also recommend using an O2 sensor socket, as it makes things pretty easy.

So can someone else confirm the size? I don't have a deep socket 22 or 27 mm. While I can certainly buy both and return one, I'd like to just get the right part the first time. Or should I just skip removing the knock sensor and just keep flushing the crap out of everything both using regular "fill and drain" methods as well as using a flush kit (with a piece of extra heater host so that I don't have to cut mine)??? I am going to replace the Dex-Cool with the yellow "All Makes / All Models" yellow so there shouldn't be any 'turning to jelly' issues...

27.18 and 26.86 are the two measurements that I got. Which should be a 27MM socket.

Also FWIW I would not remove the knock sensor for the purpose of making sure all of the anti-freeze makes it out oif the system.

I'd say that you are correct then. Is there a difference in size based off of model year? Still not sure that it is worth the $10 socket, but then again, I am trying to keep the cost down so that in the end I don't just say "why didn't I just have this flushed professionally for $85?"

While I am at it, I might replace the coolant elbows since I hear that they are problematic. Where are they located (is it obvious)? Again, I am sitting at work and can't check until later today...

They go into the LIM and the alternator bracket that has the heater hose outlets on it.

If you need coolant elbow's let me know and I'll include some with your order. But let me know soon because it's about to ship out.

The pricing for them is on the web site and i'll waive the 12.99 fee since we already have an order for you here.

I still say don't take that sensor out. Take off both hoses that go to the radiator and put a hose one of them and start the car. That should get everything out that needs to come out.

You know now that I think of it they are. I wonder if they changed the design somewhere along the line?

Probably...I mean really, who has a 27mm deep socket sitting around? I know I used something smaller than a 27mm, since I do not own anything close to that big, and I am pretty sure it was my oxygen sensor socket.

    Front side sensor

Front and back have always been the same size on the stuff I've had. (96-05) and less than a 27mm (only because my main sets don't go that high and I used them on it) I thought 22mm or 24mm?

When putting a knock sensor back in, remember torque is 14ft lbs. Different than 14lbs causes the sensor to either be desensitized or hypersensitive.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.
