my valve spring tool should be in sometime today and i was wondering if anyone had any helpful hints on how to go about doing this. It seems like the springs need to seat a certain way on the head.

for reference these are L76 valve springs and Lsx style retainers from zzp, also have new viton valve seals to go in with them.

I am also debating if i really need to get the heads rebuilt/resurfaced, since im running out of money on my budget build. I looked and i don't see any cracks on the heads. If i remove the valves should i get the heads resurfaced? 3 angle valve job etc etc..?

    thanks in advance

if you really want a nice setup take the heads to a shop and pay a couple hundred bucks for any guides that need to be replaced, to deck them so they are flat, a good valve job, and to rebuild them.

im going this route, but im getting them ported as well so im pretty sure they are gonna be like $600 heads for me..

what kind of place should i bring these to? Whats a good price for both heads to be rebuilt? A local engines place quoted me $500 for both heads to be resurfaced, cleaned, decked and a 3 angle valve job. Seemed like kind of a steep price for me

sounds about right. a good valve job is about $200. surfacing is about $50 or a little more. cleaning and doing the rest is the hard stuff.

i would look around at the places around you. some places are cheaper just because they dont charge people for every dime they have. i found a local place near me that does fantastic work. i walked in with one of my heads and he said "supercharged?" and i didnt even say anything yet. they have reasonable prices too.

another thing you MIGHT want to look into is if you ask the right guy at the right NAPA they sometimes do headwork.

I looked at a couple of places, they "warranty" their work, im kind of skeptical of who i bring these heads to, i don't want to bend a valve first day because someone f-ed up :/

It's too bad cuz dynotech used to be right in the town next to me, till the owner passed.
I'll have to look some more i guess :/. I'll check at the local napa and see what he says.

    thanks Nick

You're getting screwed dude. For a full cleaning, new valve seals, check and replace valve guides as needed, full multi-angle valve job, magnaflux for cracks, mill the gasket surfaces a few thousandths, remove a stuck a exhaust stud, and give them a fresh coat of paint was only $187-ish after tax. That's from a quality performance machine shop that does LSx builds the such as well as normal machine shop services.

I had them rebuild the heads to stock so there's no confusion, then I put my L76 springs and LSx retainers on myself on the work bench.

Here's the guys that did mine:

AMS - High Performance Racing Parts

They're also going to do some port work on my N/A heads I took off. The guy who bought them wants them ported out for his turbo build, and seeing the work they do on LSx heads (which are extremely similar to our heads) made him want to go through with it.

They're just a couple miles down the street from me.

Oh, I saw in your first post where you said that they look like they go on a certain way. It's not that complicated. The fat end goes down is all you need to know.

actually I stumbled upon them because of their name, haha

Remember, I had a DSM and their is a company called AMS that makes parts for the 4G63T in the 1st gens, 2nd gens, and Evo's.

I believe the DSM AMS company is located around the Chicago area and there are rumors that they are affiliated with the gang scene down there.

    Who knows?!?!
