Thread: AC Recharge Question

Hey everyone, I searched for this and mostly found questions about compressors and what not.

I just bought my 01 GTP this winter, so naturally the AC was cold then. Now that it's hot out here in MA, I've found that my AC isn't so cold. I decided to recharge it using one of those bottles you can get at Target that contains stop leak. I've done this on a Neon and an Accord, but on the GTP I see two different "caps" that I could undo to attach the hose to, and I just want to be sure I use the right one. Is it the green one behind the engine, up by the cowl? Or is it the black one right behind my airbox? If it's that one I have no clue how I can hold the can upright without taking out the airbox.

its the one in the middle by the firewall on the back of the engine. Start the engine and turn on the a/c with the bottle connected, and it will suck it in, shake the can in the process.

One is the high side and one is the low side. Just becuase it's not cold does not really mean it needs to be recharged. It could be that you have air in the lines or something like that. And it's always good to buy a set of gauges when doing it so you don't overfill it. If i remember corectly an overcharged A/C system can have the same symptoms as you are describing.

Thanks for the quick responses. The last time I did this (with my mom's old Accord) the bottle I bought had a built in gauge, which was kind of nice. I couldn't find that one though, so I might just wait til I get over to a friends house (who has the right kind of gauges). Either way though, I think I have the info I need to take care of this. Hopefully I get this resolved easily. I didn't like seeing 97 degrees on my rear view mirror thermometer.

Ok, encountered an odd problem I didn't expect to have. Aren't most of these ports where you can plug in a can of the refrigerant pretty much universal? The one by the firewall is too small. The one right behind the airbox is too big? Argh.

Chrysler made some ports a special size where you had to buy an adapter. But that was years ago. The servicing kits that you described only have a Low side connector. The two sizes make it "idiot proof" as you cannot connect to the wrong port. Sometimes it takes a little time to align the hose connector to the adapter on the car. The connector by the firewall is the correct one you need to service as it is the Low side adapter.

I'll try it again, and I'll be more patient since it is a tough angle for a guy like me with short arms... thanks.
