Chilton and Haynes merged several years back.
When I first purchased AllData I was very reserved about doing so thinking I would only use it once or twice and it would be a waste. Boy was I wrong. Ive used it A LOT! Not just for me but to also help people out on here as well. It has been invaluable with regards to pin outs, wiring schematics, component locations and so on. Very good stuff.
I have a Haynes manual as well. I typically use that for quick information, but when I need detailed stuff I go to AllData.
GM service manuals from ebay
all I know is the haynes manual for my 78 280z, and the one for my buddies 80 firechicken are siiiiiiiiiick, they give you exploded views of the alternators, starters, etc... how to take off body panels and everything. My manual for the 00 cavalier sucks ass, if it weren't for the wiring diagrams and torque specs I would have thrown it out long ago!
ohhh how I miss my Z :'(
anyways, after rummaging through a few manuals at the parts store I'll agree with you all. They are great for quick references but AllData is better for detailed stuff. My old high school has a subscription so I'll occasionally run over there and borrow their wifi from the parking lot when I'm in a bind. I think for now I'll just pick up a manual from the store and run to the HS when needed.
