Racing, and power steering.

Hey friends.
I plan on taking my 01 GTP to Thunder Hill raceway for a track day down the road.
The car is ready to go at this point, however I don't trust that the power steering will hold up without grenading. Do these cars just have weak pumps? Is there anything I can do to make sure it can make it through a whole day of track use?

this a road course or a drag strip? either way cant see the p/s pump being a issue.

Turbo is the way to go.

It's the fluid temp I'd be worried about on a road course. A cooler for the fluid would go a long way.

The impala police package cars had a factory cooler etc that can sometimes be found a junkyards for little money
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

@Scotty: Yes it's a road course. Both my 97 and my current 01 seem real eager to make unhappy p/s noises. I had the rack replaced about 10k ago. Perhaps I just need a new pump, or maybe they are all noisy from time to time?
I'd definitely be interested in a cooler! Are there any kits out there?
Also could you say, put on a larger pully to underdrive the power steering? Would that lower the stress on it?

I'd worry more about brakes than steering. Be sure you have new pads and rotors and bring an extra set for changeout afterwards. I know of someone who burned up a caliper on a road course.

Thank you for the reminder. I have new 12" rotors up front, and new pads all around. Although I am using DOT 3 fluid. Is there any disadvantage to running dot 4/5 etc?

DOT4/5 are actually better for racing. They have a substantially higher boiling point, which is a huge enemy in racing. Dot4 is around 450* and Dot5 is around 500*; whereas Dot3 is around 400*.
If you're going to run them, you have to do a complete flush though, the chemical makeup is different.
