Not sure where to put this post in these forms I apologise if it is in the wrong location. I'm curious if the awd transmission from a Montana 3.4 will bolt up to the 3.8 series 2 motor. I have a 2002 gtp and was thinking on using the rear axle and transmission from a Montana to convert to awd. Has anyone else tried this? If so, any tips on the conversion?

Where will the drive shaft go?

If it's a 4T65e, the bolt pattern is the same but that doesn't mean it'll fit on the W-body subframe.

I know from experience that the montana subframe bolts directly up to the grand prix. Main difference is that it has the mounts for the 3.4. Probably would be best to lay the two subframes side by side and see where they've modified it to clear the driveshaft.

As far as the transmission, yes, it will directly bolt up. The main issue is that at least on the aztek's the body control module plays a part in controlling the awd. Not to mention, that there is not tuning support from hptuners for this. You could try messaging them, but I doubt they would go through the trouble unless you're willing to pay through the nose.

I'm sure if you beat on the underside of the car enough you could get it to fit after a LOT of fabricating, but the rear would be really tricky to fit in there. I'd probably look more into the aztek/rendezvous with the independent suspension/air ride if you're going through the trouble.

The biggest issue is that these things were never designed to take any power whatsoever. They frag on the stock 3.4. They're really just not built well. Personally I wouldn't waste my time on it, but it would definitely make a good project albeit futile!

GM made a concept car in the early 00's called the G8 (not to be confused with the Commodore G8). It was a Grand Prix with an LS1 and the versatrak AWD same as used in the Montana & Aztek. The system did not hold up to the power of the LS1 very well, but they did fit it in the 97-03 Grand Prix body.

That car's still in a museum. Just supercharge a Montana, which has been done, and keep your feet on the ground.

All that work to drive around a straight-piped ****box with rusted rockers, blown struts and a spray painted dash ain't worth it. If a person was going to spend that much time and money, just buy an already AWD car with boost like an audi or something.

It does look cool. I can dig it. Too bad the pics don't show anything but exterior body work. When the just RWD conversion stuff comes up, I usually say buy a same year Camaro, put it in the garage next to a GP and a welder and don't come out until done. Looks kinda like what GM did there but yeah with Montana junk. However, in any case, the very best that anyone can end up with is still a Grand Prix. Those take you a mile down a road just like Bugattis and bicycles do.
All Grand Prix, all the time. 69 Model J, 99 GT & GTP coupes. All junk, haha.

I know why the general didn't put it into the market place. Bottom line is they could never warrantee it. You can't put a real deal power plant in a car and have pos components behind it and put it into service.. However like you said IDJ I can dig it.

Yep, that. And insurance throttles the world. Hellcats and such slide in under the radar but Pontiac made nowhere near enough stuff to offset a few wild hairy beasts like that is. Not in them days. But she's a looker and I bet it yanks pretty hard. Definitely more to that ride than meets the eye, at a glance.
