So I may or may not need it machined? How long will a single last with an xp and 90s? I figured do 130s so I could shift up to 6200
I always hear mixed things about what valve springs will work and what ones do not with said cams, I've had people tell me they ran 90s on a S3x Intense cam for years with no issues, and others tell me that 90s will never last and you need at least 130s for something like that. But 130s do seem a tad overkill for an XP cam, most guys run 105s iirc.
So single roller it is, I still need modified retainers With both 90 and 105 correct?
So my last question which sounds like it'll be an opinion more than a fact but 105 or 90s?
I personally like 105s with cams, they work for the vs, xp, and s1x, going bigger and you'll want 130s or 150s depending on the cam. Nothing wrong with the 90s it's just a personal preference.
I had a machined gear on my double roller and ran 2 gaskets and it still rubbed on one of my covers with the turbo cam. Now this may have been installer error since it didn't happen with my xp or is3 cam setups, same double roller was used with all my builds. That being said if I were to do it again I would have it machined, use a machined oil pump cover and use the thicker gasket just to be safe. Is it needed, no, but I'd rather have the extra room.
Don't forget the oil high pressure kit if you don't already have one.

OEM T chain with 27k, upgraded to VS/105's. 46k later the tensioner and chain went out taking out 8 valves and 4 of 6 pistons, 300 mile tow bill/etc that would have paid for at least 3 double roller sets.

Pulling the engine right now all my parts are here, should I leave the balance shaft and gear on? I've read the forum and there is a lot of controversy just your opinions.
If you're using the stock timing chain the yes leave it on. If you're using the rollmaster double then you have to remove balance shaft gear, you can leave the shaft in though it hurts nothing to leave it in.
If you are running an xp, you should be using a 130# spring.
Okay balance shaft stays in.
What's your beef with the 90s? I know they have a high ramp rate but other than that they seem pretty solid.
