Install them yourself and buy a tuner?
It's a suggestion but it may not be what you wanted.
I don't know any members off hand that have a tuner out in LA.
california is the land of freedom haters. modifying the tune is illegal, headers are illegal, and a different thermostat won't make much difference.
like 5fingerdeathpunch said, put them on yourself, get yourself a tuner and learn to tune it yourself.
edit: now that I think about it, ericspeculas lives in california someplace, he might be able to help you do the work, but not sure.
Yeah California is horrible. Why wont the therm help? It was suggested on here. It wont help the engine run cooler?
the stock thermostat runs at 195 degrees, the 160 is too cold, and the 180 doesn't drop the temperature that much. if your coolant system is running properly, then 15 degrees colder isn't going to make a lot of difference. plus, you have to tune for it so you don't get a check engine light.
I've never had to tune for a 180 other than the fan settings. 160 will give a too cold code but not the 180.
I doubt you'll be able to pass emission either with the cat that comes with your headers in Cali, cali doesn't count when companies say "50 state legal" but you could have one welded in that is California legal.
The So Cal guys have their own facebook group SoCal Pontiac 3800 Club. Maybe someone can help you there.
Yeah those ****ing morons at CARB are going to SAVE THE PLANET. They even want to ban black cars. caues "they get too hot" I'll try that FB page.
I forget who's headers I have, but I've got a SMOG guy that keeps letting them pass. But now the flex fitting needs replacing : ( And, what's the point that they don't test the tail pipe anymore?? I put in a 180 stat. & never had any probs. Unless it hot out, it's usually 188. : )
The guy I use barked at my short ram intake. He "encouraged" me to put the stock air box in for the next smog. I'm up again next month. Fingers crossed. lol.
Yeah, I know tuners in LA, but they are all heavy LS1 tuners at a heavy price. Few guys are really good, but with the cost, might as well buy a lap top and software and learn my self.
Sub'd to this post for further updates. I'd like a local tuner to help with a future top swap.
I'm in Valencia.
