I have a 99 GTP. I'm tracking down a freon leak and have a question. Do the service port caps over the high and low side ports act as seals? The reason I ask is with the car not running, if I take either port cap off and put my finger over the hole, I can feel pressure. Is this normal? If not normal, are the valves serviceable? Thanks in advance for your help.

Yes, the high and low ports have a valve just like on a rubber valve stem on the tire. They can leak if the seal on them is bad.
Squirt some water on them, if they show bubbles and leak then you know you have a problem.

Just went out and sprayed them, definitely showing bubbles. Are there special tools for getting the valves out, or can you do it with tire valve tools?

In the chance that they are similar in size you can use one, but they might be larger and need a bigger tool to get them out.
You will lose a bunch of R134a in the process of course but if the system is nearly empty from the previous leak then I guess it doesn't matter. Just be careful with the high side because it does have a ton of pressure if the system isn't empty.
I have a work discount but I can pick up small 12oz cans for around $2.50, so even with that they aren't much more and not alot of money to pick up a few cans.

try two small screw drivers inside the valve, then try to snug it up. might be all it needs.

I got the low port valve out with a tire valve tool. I have some tire valves but of course despite looking the same size as the one extracted, the threads must be different cuz I can't thread the new one in. The high port valve looks to be some type of check ball, so I'm stuck on that one too. I threaded the old one back in, and put a can of freon in, but I still feel it escaping. Guess I'm replacing the hoses. Being the original owner I guess after 17 years it's to be expected. The hoses are about $90 on rockauto, so that's not too bad. At least I know for sure now I need the hoses. Thanks for you help!

They sell a kit at the parts stores with new sheader valves. Some GM's have a different type for one of the sides that Unscrews. The standard tool for tires works for getting the valve out.
if I have to drain a system I just hook up my gauge set with a empty can and poke a hole in it and slow let it out. That way oil doesn't spray everything

I saw what you are talking about on rockauto. I'm ordering some parts for my Jeep, will get it from there. The high side port looks like it screws out on mine while the low side doesn't.Originally Posted by J57ltr
