I used to work with a K&N competitor, and will agree that the cotton based/oiled air filters get a bad rap for no reason. They still filter very well, well enough that you don't have to worry about any dust that might get past them hurting your engine.

I had one in my Hyundai and my Camry. Just hate how biased people are about them. Really makes you think.
I think they are cost effective. A cleaning kit cost under $20 and lasts for years and if you replace your filter as you should, a rechargable filter will pay for itself in years.

To me they are just over priced and do nothing. No way they add "performance" that you could even feel.

Even if they allow for better airflow, who says the car can even use that extra airflow. Modern cars so smart that they can see this stuff, if the filter does indeed allow more air in that before it will know and adjust everything on the fly. Even at WOT, the engine itself will only require so much air based on engine speed, throttle blade position etc etc etc, so the gains are so minimal because really a stock WIX style filter isn't choking it.

My 03 had one in when we bought it. Took it out and cleaned up the box and put a wix in. So I have a k&n panel on the shelf now.

So you're saying more air doesn't equal more power and you drive a supercharged car???

I would think in the supercharged GP, it would like more air and could utilize the claimed gains better and could potentially increase throttle response and power, but at a miniscule level. Mine being n/a, I don't know if it will do anything. Hell, washing and vacuuming seems to add power/make it drive better lol. But, my point was proven at the different reviews...you've got people that swear by them, and people who say they are useless. I'm sure this topic has been beat to death though. If the filter does actually increase air flow, more fuel has to be dumped to increase the power. Can't have one without the other and magically gain hp and tq numbers.

    I don't own a grand prix anymore.

Read what I said again, just because it can flow more air doesn't mean the engine can use it. I don't get what you don't get.

As an example if the engine with stock wix style filter can only eat just say 500CFM of air at full throttle how will installing a more free flowing air filter change how much the engine can take in? I don't have the facts for what the maximum airflow through each of these filters are but what if one could do 600CFM and the other 525 CFM but the engine can only do 500CFM, why would there be more power?

There's always a slight loss through a filter, it takes energy to move the air through the filter. The denser the media, the harder air is to pass through it. I guess the easier it is, a small amount more air may be able to make it through. Imagine putting 4 filters in a row in series, that would definitely result in less power. A slight vacuum would be created before the throttle body

I get what you're saying. Like using race gas in something with 8.5:1. When the engine gets enough octane, thats enough. If a restrictive bottleneck exists in an intake path, its probably the ducting causing it rather than an air filter not letting air by fast enough.

    four is just anti everything

some cars respond to filters, cai better than other cars, these cars not so much.

A higher flowing filter does indeed let more dirt in, thats a fact, cant get more air without more dirt. You want a synthetic oil-less fiber vs a oiled cotton filter if you want more air flow and "better" protection. You wont get better protection than paper filters though, and to get more flow you just increase the surface area, not that hard.

Had a "almost" flat tire this morning, it randomly dropped from 35 psi to 5 psi, aired it back up and it's still holding after 6 hours...

Weird but I'm rolling with it.

If you like to hear engine noises, do it. That's the most noticeable thing from a "better" flowing intake.

    Notice the quotations. Lol
