Went to town today about 30 miles from home.. Car was running fine and now it starts and dies. After it does I smell rotten eggs from the ac in the car and from exhaust and engine bay.. Car has half tank gas. Is it cat converter or what do you think? Fuel pump kicks on when I put ignition to on. Car has 58k miles and is a 2001.

Should I just get it towed home? It's 25 miles away and 130$. I can't leave it overnight and no ride for a good 4 hours

Is that normal for it to just do this all of sudden? Car was running fine started right up and no ses light. Just doesnt want to stay running

Its possible. Has it felt slower over the last few hundred/thousand miles?

I didn't notice any change from any other grand prixs I've owned. Now the question is it a good idea to just cut the cat off and do straight pipe and can you do it without welding? After the smell im leaning towards a bad cat. I did run seafoam through this tank of gas and it still has half a tank left. I used the 1oz to 1 gal ratio

I did notice last couple hundred miles the car would rock after I shut it off not sure if that's relevant. I did get it to stay running twice now but I was very rough at 2000-3000 rpm and about 4000-5000 it sounded ok but normally in park I thought there was a rev limit but it went all way to 5k

Technically, theres ways to straight pipe the cat section without welding. But really, it needs to be welded

I see. It smoked a lot when I had it up to 5k like the car was seafoamed through the intake.. Soon as it let it drop to about 2k it died on me. Really confused on this whole situation I didn't notice anything wrong with it. Would smoke still come out exhaust if the cats clogged?

Possible... but cat clogged wouldn't cause it. Might be more issues going on here.

what engine you have in this car?

pull the vac line off the fpr see if it has gas in it, or smells of gas.

It's 3800 series 2. I have a twist for you guys.. Got it home put some gas antifreeze in the gas tank.. Got it started, put gas in it to top it off. Here's the big twist..I started it again and it has ses. Put code reader on it and it was p0101, maf sensor which I replaced with a new one about 9k miles ago, I deleted the code and the car died. Now it won't start again. Starts and dies

what brand maf? these cars HATE aftermarket maf's. a junk yard oem maf is best, and cheapest at like 40 bucks most of the time.

i running a 5 year old jy maf still.

it was a ac delco once from napa. i paid a good amount for it. The ses never came back for 10k or so miles now. Im really confused on how it doesnt start after i deleted the code. Like it was running okay once i actually got it started, put gas in, and brought it home, let it sit, started it up and then the ses was on, so i got my reader and deleted it after i found out the code. So confused..Not sure if it has clogged cat now to be honest. It drove okay, not like it was before it stopped starting.

It seemed like it didnt want to give the engine the gas soon as i stepped down on gas pedal, but after a second it started to take the gas. I think mabey fuel filter, fuel regulator is the issue, not quite sure.

unplug the maf and then fire it up.

if it runs now the maf or its wires to it are bad.

I looked up on a couple different forums, and seems like the MAF sensor is bad. Im not sure how that is as i got a new ac delco one like 10k miles ago, but crazier **** has happened. I may run to junkyard and get a used one not paying over 200$ for another one to go out again. Im going to take the maf off, and see if that makes a difference. A couple of the forums said it didn't make a difference if it was on or not, that it died the same way. Ill try the MAF and see. I hate this, the SES was on when i bought it at 49K miles, put a new one on right away, deleted the code, and it was fine. Now at 58,3xxx miles its throwing the MAF code again and doing this bs. Costed me 130$ to tow it to my house. Really gets me is that it ran okay after i got it started, then deleted code and now its doing the same thing. Such a bad day for me i swear.

check fuse 21 under the hood too, if its blow it can cause a maf code to pop up as well.

dont take it out. just unplug it, then start the car. maf unplgged puts the engine in closed loop. it should run.

Ok ill try that tomorrow and check fuse 21 I am so done with today. Its like the day my amp started smoking in the same car, so i took my 2004 out to go to town and blew my coolant elbows. Just deal with it tomorrow i suppose after work. Good thing i still have my 2004 and its running good.
