well my 98 gt died today.......started running hotter than normal...not overheated but around 230-240 i watched the temp gauge rise and fall. i believe my head gaskets went and took out the crank... definitely spun a rod bearing ....

I'd say the intake gaskets blew and sent coolant into the crankcase.

Check the oil for coolant or metal particles. And are you sure it's a rod knock? Running at 240 won't kill a 3800.

240F isn't going to hurt a head gasket and definately isn't considered overheating. That really doesn't matter though...since your engine is toast either way.

checked the oil...full of metal.... feels gritty .

like i said it never overheated, but the gauge was going from just under 210 where it normally showed up to the 3\4 mark which i assume is around 240-250

the oil change was done around 600-700 miles ago
the oil light never came on
    oil level is full

    coolant is full as well

i just dont understand what happened..

i was not even driving it hard running 70-75 up the freeway

hmm odd. Who knows, maybe the oil filter failed and took out the bearings. I cut open my oil filters when I change mine, there's always gritty stuff. Not metal but like carbon. If the oil pressure sensor didn't trip the light it didn't lose all pressure, assuming it didn't get stuck.

oil change recently....like within the last 500 miles done by myself ac delco pf 47 filter
thing that strikes me as odd is in 100 miles it went through 1/2 tank of gas

Take apart the filter man. Ac delco filters aren't known to be very good... I just cut a quarter inch from the cap with a hand saw.

well...i found an engine from a 99 lesabre with 99k on it i think this will be the donor engine for my gp.....
i know that i have to swap oil pans, pick up tubes and exhaust. but that will be the easy part.
figuring that since i have a decent platform that is rust free and in decent shape with a new ( rebuilt ) transmission this is my best option.

You were dumping fuel. Cylinders got fuel soaked, gas got in oil, gas spun bearings.

You would swap your rear exhaust manifold, upper intake manifold/TB, PCV/Evap soleniods, the alternator and tensioner bracket, and the vacuum (very minimal) and maybe the oil filter adapter.

The base engine is pretty much the same. FWIW you don't have to swap oil pans on a LeSloppy, same steel pan. Swap the oil filter adapter put the big bracket on for engine mount and smile.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

If it came out of an 08 you need to change the knock sensors. They changed them in 06 iirc.
