I have a 2008 Grand Prix gxp and after driving it for around 45 minutes my transmission temperature can reach up to 231 degrees. It shifts smoothly and the tranny fluid is red. Is this an issue that needs to be dealt with?

You need to get a trans cooler on there before you have to replace the trans.

    THIS!

Mine used to range up to 210-215. I had it hotter once when I was in traffic for an hour trying to get out of Houston on a trip. I put a big B&M cooler on it and haven't been over 190 since. Typically I run 175 or so. That's been in 100+ degree weather since I added the cooler.

If the fluid is regularly getting that hot, you likely need to drop the pan and replace the fluid. If you are that far in I would recommend doing a Transgo shift kit. I did that and have been very pleased with the results.

231 is a little high. 210-215 is completely fine though.

The 231 was a one time thing that's just the highest it has reached after I beat on it a little bit. The average range is 210-215

Ideally, your transmission fluid should be 175*F, for every 20*F you increase the temperature, you cut the fluid's like in half. Normally, transmission fluid should last ~100,000 miles (@175*F of course).
