The Advance where I grew up is an awesome store. They have had the same store manager now for probably 15 years, and you can't ask that guy a question about parts that he can't answer. Unfortunately, I moved away from there about 10 years ago. After all these years I still remember the phone number there, and that's how you know my mustang in high school was a piece of ****.
Where I live now, the locally owned napa store is the best one if you need help or something obscure. Unfortunately they are priced a good bit higher than the AutoZone's etc. When I can I still use them. After that the Oriellys we have is way better than the Advance or Autozone we have.
Mostly women in the Advance store. Not that women don't know cars lol, just sayin...
I work at Cap(Consumer Auto Parts). And omg i used to work at Advanced and left for cap and yea they are quite slow.... And Auto zone your better talking to a wall atleast they wont give you wrong parts. Just give them part numbers, if they can even handle that. Everyone comes to us because we are actually knowledgeable about cars and parts.
a guy at big o tires confused the supercharger for a water pump. i thought that was pretty disgraceful
It's a part time job that requires much more training than anyone has time for. It requires the desire to learn as well. The reality is, the turnover rate is very high, and most employees don't stay long enough to learn enough to be considered competent by the backyard mechanic standard.
Many people, both young and old "decide" at one point they've learned everything they need to know. Those are the people you don't want to deal with.
The person you want to deal with is the one who if they don't know the answer to your question, try to find out not because you asked, but because he/she is interested in the answer as well.
What seems to escape most people it seems is that if you're of average intelligence, there are just as many people who are smarter than you, as there are dumber than you.
I'm sure there are people that are arrogant enough to call you guys stupid as well.
Comes down to this:
Do you mind if I use this in my sig, Matt?
What seems to escape most people it seems is that if you're of average intelligence, there are just as many people who are smarter than you, as there are dumber than you.
Sure, why not.
Thanks man, I love it. I hope you're not talking about me; I readily admit that I don't know what the hell I'm doin lol. Just thinking and learning and planning.
Not talking about anyone in particular to be honest.
Just starting to get tired of hearing people complain about other people's intelligence. It's not a choice, you don't choose your intelligence.
My local Autozone is my goto for parts and advice, but they typically keep either mechanics between jobs or backyard hobbyists behind the counter. Considering the economy around here, that's not as hard as it sounds.....
I refuse to use the local Advance Auto....drooling, mentally disadvantaged monkeys would be more useful than those idiots.
Just goes to show, it's based upon management at the store and hiring practices locally.
They should have a few simple question test, and the pay is based on how well they answer it. Such as:
What's the difference between supercharged and turbocharged (both works differently)
What type of spark plugs are usually used on diesel engine (technically they only use glow plugs to warm up cold engine, no spark plug at all)
What's the difference between disc brake and drum brake (one's thinner than other)
etc...
Flunk all question, they get McMinimum wage and be more likely to get work schedule during slower time so they'd end up doing mostly cleaning and organizing shelves rather than giving customers bad advice.
When I went to get my oil, filter, and sway bar end links at Advance on Saturday, the guy ringing me out was talking about how they were rebuilding the motor for a GTP at school, and how sludged up it was because the guy never took care of it. Kinda interesting. That is all.
Everyone gota start somewhere. None of us was born known how to change Plug wires or what a celica looks like. Maybe the guy loves cArs and this is how he gets to learn. **** As long as u wana learn ..... At least thAt guys not yur mechanic. Your point is valid op. But mine is we all start somewhere when it comes to A hobby. He just chooses the wrong place . Lol
