Hello everyone! I have been looking at a 2006 Grand Prix GT with 182,000 miles on it. Engine and transmission are both original. I test drove it the other day and checked under the hood and everything seems to be ok. The dealer originally wanted my 1998 Astro van (234,000 miles) plus $3950 for the car. I told him no and left the lot; the next day he called with a counteroffer and said he would take my van plus $3250. My last 3 cars have been Bonnevilles (93 SSEI, 98 SSE, 00 SSE) and I am a big fan of Pontiac. My questions are: 1) Is that price worth it for a GP with that many miles? 2) Is there a major difference between the 3.8 Series II and the Series III? Thanks in advance!

So they want like $5,000 for the car?

I know I wouldnt buy one with that many miles, but beening that its an 06 its not super old yet either.

Only thing that really would worry me is the transmission, the motor should be just fine.

Between the 2 and 3, not much changed. The rods are different, compression is the same, 2005.5ish have better intake gaskets and the 3 has the better supercharger. I assume this car is supercharged being that you said its a 06 GT.

If it came with some sort of warranty I would prolly pick it up.

Jeez thats a lot they are wanting for that car! I bought a 05 for 5.5k with 112k Miles on it from a private seller. Can you get a private loan or do you have to go through a dealer?

Thanks for the feedback I appreciate it! No, I wouldn't have to go thru a dealer for financing. I will start watching Craigslist a bit harder.

I would pass on it. That's a lot of money for an 06 with almost 200k. I'm sure you could find a much better deal on that gen gp.

KBB on a 98 Astro with 234k in "good" condition is $1142, plus the 3250 he wants makes the total $4392.

I say go for it. I have a 2004 with 238k, and apart from the occasional hard shift, she's rock solid. I paid 4k for mine with 199k on the clock, one owner and kept in a garage, plus maintenance records.

With the 3.8 engine, you have many, many miles left without major issues. The biggest repair mine has needed was a water pump, and that was at 218k. Like others have said, the transmission is the weak point in these cars, but Ive known people who got 300k out of them.

No way that car is worth more than 3500, plus anything that runs and drives is worth at least 1500 so he wants about 5k for that car.

5k for a 06 with 183k...pass bro. I bought mine for $800 with 200k on it. My brother bought a 05 century with 72k on it for $1200. There's way better deals out there than what you got offered.

The price isn't terrible. My 07 GT has 161,000 on it now. Don't forget the 06 and 07 GT's are supercharged so its not a NA GT.

Private party value on my car is around $6,000 right now. Suggested retail value is around $7,600.

On an 06 GT with 182,000 miles private party value is $5,600. Suggested retail is $7,300.

Sure there are probably better deals to be found, but the price is more than fair.
