Thread: Vapor Canister replacement

My first post in a while.

1999 Grand Prix GTP 223,000 miles

I have a SES code of 0440 that was pulled at Autozone. Just got back from my neighboorhood auto repair shop who informed me (after doing a smoke test) that i needed the vapor canister and vent valve replaced. He quoted over 500 bucks to do the job. I asked why so much and he said he had to drop the gas tank to get at the parts.

In doing some research, I found that the unit is behind the drivers side rear tire and can be access by removing the tire and pulling the plastic liner.

Does anyone know who is correct.

Already did that (and the purge solenoid also)

I had the chance to pull the drivers side tire and remove the plastic access panel (2 screws). The canister is clearly visible but in a spot where is't subject to a lot of corrosion. I'm going to try and replace it myself.

I'm having the same issue on my 97 gtp. So far I've only changed the gas cap which hasn't helped. Was just wondering if changing the canister solved your problem

Haven't had a chance to tackle it yet. Since the service engine light is going off and on periodically, I had it emission tested while the light was off and it passed (Bought me some time). The weather has been pretty crappy and I need to change it outside. I plan on doing it soon.
