I'm working on a 1993 Grand Prix, sedan, standard looking pull up door handles where the drivers side won't open from the outside. I've got the whole thing apart, door handle off, I popped off the rod going to the door handle, adjusted the barrel up a couple turns. So far I've been doing all this by trial and error, but I believe I'm headed down the right path.

Problem now is that I can't, for the life of me get the rod threaded back up through and attached down at the linkage in a position where it is in the correct position to accept the door handle. It seems like it should be straight forward, there can really only be two positions based on how it fits into the handle, but I'm striking out. I'm beginning to wonder if it's bent incorrectly. I can't bear the thought of having to take apart the other door to see how the rod should be positioned, but I can't find any diagrams or photos of the way this assembly should look.

Thoughts on how I solve this problem?

Man, it's hard to believe nobody on this forum has had experience replacing a door handle on an older Grand Prix and adjusting the travel on the rod. I've found the thread on this topic but with the coupe where the door handle is up in the door frame close to the window, it appears to be a different animal. I've been able to get the rod back into the door handle, but I'm still not getting the travel necessary to activate the catch down in the latch mechanism itself.

I could still really use some help...

I can't offer much help but I had to do this on my sons 92 Regal..... several times. I'm not sure how to put it. I had to remove the handle from the two 10 mm bolts on the inside, put it in the top part of the handle and shove my hand in the door and line up the rod with the pin in it (with the plastic clip piece) and try to jam it into the hole on the door.

    You can try this.

Sorry to revive an old thread but I just had the same issue on my 93 GP SE. Figured I'd share my solution.

Remove the bolts holding the cover onto the handle mechanism. DO NOT lose these. Without the bolts securing the handle it can pull apart and break easily. When you get the cover off, you'll see the long threaded bar that push the latch.

If your door isn't opening from the outside but opens from the inside, its usually an issue with where the pin is threaded on that bar.

If you use something flat, you can remove the clip holding the pin that holds the handle to the mechanism.

When you slide the clip forward, it'll free the pin on the bar. Just loosen it a bit so it pushes the bar for the latch further, then reassemble it. Make sure you put the pin through the clip before you slide it back onto the handle mechanism.

Its actually very simple. I just recently replaced both of my lock cylinders in my door and my driver-side door handle assembly. It actually cracked from yanking on it when I had this issue.
