Hey guys, I'm considering getting an 04-08 GP or an 06-09 Impala SS.

Ideally, I prefer the GXPs but finding a stock or lightly modded car with under 60K for a good price, in my area seems more difficult than i expected. That leads me to consider the above mentioned cars. Primarily, I'm looking for a clean low mileage sedan with some performance and extra performance potential. With that said, do you guys have any recommendations? Which might suit my needs best a GXP, GTP, blown GT, or Impala SS? I want something that's as good on gas as possible, but still a quick car, and worth the money.

I also have a 94 Trans Am, auto, t tops, with 75K miles that I'm the second owner of that I would be willing to possibly trade with cash. I have a 2006 HHR 2LT with 80K I'd also consider trading with cash.

    Appreciate any advice.

If you like the GXP, get the GXP. If you can't find one "Local", expand your search.

Rule #1 of car buying: Never settle for something you don't want.

If you want that v8 sound and potential for that, i'd go with the GXP, but if you want a V6 and love to hear that whine of the SC, get a GTP. Plus GTP's have potential to be on par and or better than GXP's. Not sure what kind of aftermarket GXP's have performance wise.

Well from what I've read, each are easily mid 13 second cars with bolt ons. My previous car was a 99 Trans Am with an LS1 and a shift kit. Essentially a mid 13 second car. I like my Hhr for gas mileage, it averages about 25, but it doesn't have much pick up. So I'm trying to compromise by getting a sedan with performance but that still gets decent mileage.

@Explicit. I know what you are saying, but I'm open minded to the other cars as well. Also I don't want to drive all over the country to look at cars. I'd be willing to go a few hours, but I don't really want to have to take off from work for several days just to look at cars for sale. I also don't want to buy anything sight unseen.

Last I heard 08s on any point have locked PCMs and are a PITA to tune, IF you can find someone to unlock them and be able to tune them at all.

GXPs are easily modded, turbo kit, exhaust, tune. Other bolt ons are like modding a LS engine, a couple bolt ons, mostly tear down and build it parts. But it is do-able. They are rare'r and the sound is worth it all on its own, but if you want to mod a v8 you may look at a different platform.

I personally would go with a 04-05 Comp G or try and find a SE GTP I think 06-07 models. The supercharged L32 can be modded to a pretty quick car with simple bolt-ons and give or take $1000 bux. Intake, headers, slightly smaller pulley and a good tune and you should be mid 13s.

All in all its what you really want and what is in your budget, the GXPs tend to be more just on rarity and the fact its a V8, but like said, don't settle for something you don't want.

How do you know if a Gtp is an SE Gtp? Thanks for the 08 info. Is that just on the blown 6s or the Gxp as well? I guess it would habe to be the GXP, bc there wasn't a SC'd motor offered in 08 to my knowledge. Also, I know in 04 when the Gtp came out in the newer bodystyle it was rated at 260 hp, I was thinking since then I have seen blown Gts 06 and 07 that were rated at 240hp. Is this just a misprint or was GM putting two different versions of their supercharged 3800 in these cars? Do all the supercharged cars have the same gear ratios? Or is the comp g any different?

    GXP's have plenty of performance potential;
    Intakes
    Ported TBs
    Larger mafs
    LS6 intake
    1.8 roller rockers
    Doug Thorley headers
    Exhausts
    Tune
    Most suspension parts carry over
OverKilled, HAI, Ported Throttle body, Ported intake, ZZP DP, Magnaflow, BMR ta's, GMPP STB's, CCS springs, tinted tailights, roof rails, TEP cool'r, G8 hood. Glass Gearbox.

    I said a couple bolt-ons lol

The Comp-G GTPs are badges specially with the Competition Group emblems and have a couple extra features not found on most other GTPs, the SEs are Special Editions, also specially badges with Special Edition in chrome letters on the doors but they are mainly just given a custom hood with heat extractors, a much desired lower lip on the front bumper, and I think a different spoiler but could be wrong on the spoiler, any other options are the same as most GTPs. Both are limited built and would be hard to find, but if you do find one definitely take a look at it and a test drive.

08s had a v6 option but it was not supercharged, most of the problems we hear about are complaints from the guys with 08 GXPs wanting to get it tuned for mods, there are suppose to be a couple well known tuners working to break them but I don't know the specifics on what they have done lately.

If you buy a GXP, personally I would just drive it, maybe do one or two small things to it, but anytime you want to add alot of power the trans is your weak point.

I have never seen the SE hood on this new bodystyle. I thought all 04+ GPs were given the same hood, with the only real aftermarket option being the inferno. Anyone have any pics of the SE hood?

That would be my plan, I am not really interested in extensive mods. I was thinking of a shift kit and Trans cooler, maybe exhaust, inferno hood, tinted windows, possible cai or tune.

One of the only photos I can find on google. It is not a very common option with the hood, basically just a 04+ version of the 97-02 extractor hood.

I see, those things look to me like just stick on pieces atop a factory hood. Are they actually functional?

They are very functional as heat extractors, but no ram air or anything. For that you would have to get the inferno hood or something custom like it.
