    Hi all,

    I've been out of the modding game for quite awhile. Sadly, I'm looking to sell a GTP that's been in the hands of both my brothers before me. At one time it was completely rebuilt to run in the high 12 seconds 1/4, until it threw a rod.

    Then my oldest brother replaced the engine and transmission with stock used parts (lower mileage than the car if that makes a difference), and pretty much returned everything to stock except the intake (custom FWI), exhaust (3" downpipe, u-bend delete, Magnaflow), and PCM (DHP). Also, his race-tuned suspension was left in, though I don't know the specifics on it off hand. Finally, it has a Viper alarm/remote start system that I'm hoping can add a bit to the value of the car.

    It's a 2002 black GTP Coupe, 121,000 miles (less on the engine and transmission, I intend to contact the shop that replaced them to try to find out how much less), premium audio, sunroof, leather, heated seat, HUD, and 17" wheels. The body has a few scuffs, but is otherwise in good condition. Everything is in working order mechanically and electrically.

    With the minor modifications and the alarm system installed, do you guys think this will push it just a little over the "Good" conditioned KBB value (second lowest)? It's rated at $5,300 or so, and while I'd hope to get no less than $5,000 (I know they highball a bit), would it be probable to get more since it's got a few extras? I understand that the right customer would have to be interested, of course (chances are someone looking for a family car wouldn't consider the stiff suspension an upgrade, for example), but just in general?

    KBB is a joke. Look at other Grand Prixs being sold in your area for a good idea of how much the car is "worth."

    I'd say 4,000 to 4,500 for the car.

    But every area is different for cost on cars.

    That much lower than KBB, huh? I checked Craigslist, and the GTPs I saw there were higher mileage and listing for about $4500-$5000. But that's what they're listed at, not what they're selling for.

    Does the Viper system add anything worthwhile (even just $100 or so), or is all that pretty much going to be ignored? The only car I've sold was a dead 2000 GTP that also threw a rod (without the mods pushing it, just bad luck), so I'm not used to working with values of cars that actually drive.

    Seeing how the car itself stock had its own alarm system and then installed a different alarm system, thats going to add nothing to the car.

    Post it up for whatever you think its worth and see what it sells for, that really all you can do.

    Makes sense, thanks for the insight. Maybe I can find a buyer who considers any of those things worth a little bit of a premium. At least with Craigslist and the likes, I don't have to worry about paying fees if I ask too high the first time around.

    Unforutnately mods and add on's only add value to the "right" buyer. If you find yourself the perfect buyer then they'd be happy to give you extra. However the reality is... most of the time these things don't add to the vehicle. Think about someone looking for a reliable car, they may question why a motor blew. How long do you think they stick around after they hear the car was running fast times in the 1/4 mile? They will assume beat to a pulp everything instead of the upgraded items on the car.

    Mods don't add value. It's sad, but true.

    I know people with $60,000 into their car that would be hard pressed to get $10,000 out of it if they were to sell.

    And there's a guy that I know who watched the boards for modded cars for sale. After they sat long enough he'd buy it nice and cheap, then demod, put a stock drivetrain etc back in the car. Sell the car for local going price and the mods for a good penny. He made out very well that way. Most people didn't understand why he was buying modded cars, because at the end of the day he was double or tripling his money.

    Yeah I'd say a modded stock car with a replaced engine and an aftermarket PITA alarm would go for 3800-4300 in my area, that would be if everything else checked out on a test drive and a good look under the body.

    That being said if you find some 18 year old F&F wannabe who has a part time job and like 5 grand you may be able to squeeze it out of him if you say it has a million rwhp.
