I have a 2000 GTwith the 3800. I've pulled the passenger drive shaft and have the replacement. The original is about 27 inches long and the replacement is only about 25. I can compress the old shaft about 3/4 of an inch. But the intermediate shaft is an inch shorter. This happens to be a Duralast Gold new shaft. Looking at O'Reilly, they call out the same ~25 inch length as the duralast. Any ideas? I hate to put this all together and find out the shaft is too short.

    TIA

It is too short and the new one you bought probably also only has 3 ribs in the boot and the origional has 5. I have had this same issue only i ordered mine off line and tried to run it. It lasted about a week. the boot pulled off due to the lack of ability to turn since there arent enough ribs in the boot for expansion and all the grease was thrown out. Napa is the only store i was able to find an axle that was the right length and had all the ribs in the boot. I dontknow why most the stores only have 25 inch axles but you should return it to O' Reilys and make sure you get one that is 27 inches with all 5 ribs. I'm not sure where else has them but i know Napa does.

This shaft is from Autozone. O'Reillys and NAPA actually have the shaft length listed on their website and it matches the Autozone Duralast shaft.

Ok. Went and got another passenger side shaft. It is the cheapy with the 3 ribbed boot. At least it is the same length. But I put the original back in instead. Now I finally got the driver's side off and it is also about 2 inches longer than the replacement. Do axles uncompress that much? I'm at a loss on what to do:
    1. leave the old ones in.
    2. use the duralast short ones.
    3. get some OEM shafts at 3x the price and see if they are the same length.
I really don't want to have to take these back out next week.

I've always bought napa cv axles.

The driver side is the same for all GT and GTP transmissions. The passenger side for the GTP is a different length because of the diff.

Its hard to say why they are not the same length.
