    We just bought a 04 grand prix 3.8 3 series. The day after we bought it, it died. It had a random idle issue, would cut out when cruising down the highway. Then it just died while driving. Now it won't start. Did some research, we replaced the MAP sensor and put in 3 new coil packs and wires. We have a MAF sensor coming tomorrow. No codes are showing! This is our only mode of transportation. Help!

    Have you actually done diagnostics? Does it have fuel and spark? Is the security light on?

    Throwing parts at it gets expensive quickly, enough parts and you could have paid someone to diagnose it correctly if you don't have the means to do it yourself...

    sounds like a bad crank sensor.

    Yep, I agree with Scotty as it sound like a bad crankshaft position sensor. If you noticed the tach dropping to 0 while it was still running then that would be where I would start.

    FYI, if it's not a genuine Delco MAF sensor then I'd skip it. These cars don't get along with aftermarket MAF's. If it is the MAF then either source one from a JY or get a Delco one from RockAuto.

    A bad ICM can also cause those symptoms. More expensive part though. Use an ACDelco one.

    Start by checking for fuel and spark. Like Scott said it's likely a bad crank sensor. If you check for fuel and have it, you'll be missing spark. Also check that the connections to the pcm and icm are not loose.
    I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

    We don't have the equipment to do diagnostics. My fiance used to be a general mechanic 15 years ago. There was no issue with the engine or trans and from what it was doing and what happened we knew it had to be something electrical or a sensor. We wanted to try to most common, cheap parts first before getting it towed to a shop. If the MAF doesn't fix it today, it has to go to the shop. Thank you for your help.

    Fuel pump is working, it turning on and pumping fuel, we checked that yesterday. It cranks but start. Does the crank sensor have to be programmed to the car? We have a **** ton of tools and a code reader but no way to program sensors if needed. That's why we started with the most common, cheaper sensors to start replacing first.

    could be the catalytic converter. i had a similar issue and thought my engine was blown. turned out to be a catalytic converter. did a cat delete and runs great now.
