Just watched this, and they were spot-on describing this community's origins and vibe during the early 2000's peak:
Storytime with Zoom, Tim & Matt | Talks with Trev | EP.6 | ZZPerformance - YouTube
Hope everyone gets a chance to hear it, and they definitely have alot more that can be shared.
The GPG story was something I forgot, because it was going to be a chance for those of us in attendance (100-200? members) to potentially see 3800 history be made. Instead, some of the MN crew got drunk and decided to mess with Zoom's car for a dumb laugh, breaking the unwritten code of ethics and delaying that moment. Thankfully, the car hit 9's a month later, but we had to see it on YouTube instead of live.
Other stories, like the rivalry to be first to 8's with MattM and Scott Cook's brother, Bob, and how we almost got to see Matt succeed on a 30-deg Nov day at Norwalk during the last(?) INTENSE Drag Day (IDD6?). I was standing near the burn-out box when they shut off the hose at the end of the day, and grabbed a random Mountain Dew 20oz sitting on the guard rail to give Matt something to aid his burnout (not that the TTGT needed much help). He went 9.01 on that pass!!! In front of a big crowd, we got to see an amazing run. That set the new record at the time, which was getting lowered throughout the day, with 3-4 9sec GP's participating (Scott's [broke trans], Matt's, Bob's [got to 9.4?], and ChrisH's RWD conversion [9.6?]).
