I've never had something like this happen before. Occasionally the stereo will get very loud for a second, the speedometer will fluctuate. and then the engine will shut off. Sometimes the first two things will happen and the engine keeps running, but is sluggish for a few seconds.

    Any ideas?

Might sound dumb, but check to be sure both battery cables are clean and tight. I've had some strange issues in the past when one is even slightly loose.

different make but i had a 96 taurus that started getting a crapton of strange elec issues. turned out to be the positive cables themselves. they were corroded inside the insulation from one end to the other.

Turns out, it was the engine harness making the speed sensor misbehave. The clip that was supposed to hold it to the block was plastic, in one of these cars, so it disintegrated and the CV axle did the rest.
