I took a stab at this earlier tonight. Just took off the snap ring and tried cleaning from the front. Used some carburetor cleaner and a rag and cleaned it as best as I could from the front. I can see that it would be easier with the TB out of the car but then I would need a new gasket. Still need to try and clean the EGR.

Most important when cleaning the throttle body is to make sure you inspect and if necessary clean the passage way for the IAC (idle air control) valve. This passage way, along with the pintle seat builds up with carbon and causes funky idle, remove the IAV from the throttle body very carefully not to bugger up the pintle valve, the pintle valve itself must also be cleaned too, an old toothbrush and carb. cleaner/brake cleaner works great to get into both sides of the passage ways. Carefully clean the end of the pintle valve taking care not to push, pull, turn, or change it's position, replace or inspect the o-ring on the IAC, a little oil on the o-ring helps prevent pinching on re-installation.

If my idle is smooth, should I even bother with attempting to remove? Wondering if I should attempt to clean the EGR first?
Also, I saw some posts about having a bad MAP sensor. How would I know if I have an issue with that? Car does run and idle smooth. My concern has been around fuel economy and a random check engine light for P1404 after getting the power steering issues worked out.

Before I cleaned my TB, the idle was still smooth, during cleaning I found the IAC port was megga dirty with build up, as was also the IAC pintle, I had a random off idle stumble that has cleared up after cleaning the TB, yours may be different, doesn't hurt to take a look while it is off the car for cleaning, and the o-ring should be able to reuse, but it would not hurt to have a spare handy just in case. Just be careful not to bugger up the pintle valve itself.
