Is it possible to swap an onstar compass /temp Autodim to my gp that just has the Autodim? I tried Google and searching here couldn't really find a definitive answer. Thanks

Yes you can. I did cause I needed a new auto dim mirror. I also wanted the compass. Unfortunitly I couldn't figure how to wire and get compass to work. Dimming does. LOL
The sunroof has nothing to do with the mirror.
For some reason I'm having a brain fart and can't remember how I installed mine. Did it a whole ago. Hopefully someone can chime in
As long as you have the autodim mirror in your GP you should be able to get a onstar mirror and it's connector and just swap the pins in the connectors over. If you scroll down a little bit in this post, it covers how to do it http://www.grandprixforums.net/threa...r-view-mirrors

here's my post from club gp
My 1998 had the stock Donnelly mirror with three wires: Yellow is power, Black is ground, and green is autodim inhibit. this is so the mirror will not dim when the car is in reverse. I got a Onstar mirror with a 16 pin connector and had to splice it in.
16 pin: (*required; **required if you have a temp display)
* 1 = Grey = not used
* 2 = Bare = Microphone
o OnStar Mirrors
* 3 = = "Passenger Air Bag on" notification
o some GM trucks - ground pin to activate icon
* 4 = = "Passenger Air Bag off" notification
o some GM trucks - ground pin to activate icon
* 5 = = auto day/night signal from LH outside mirror
o If you have a dimmable mirror, the rearview mirror can dim it with this and pin 16
* 6 = Brown = Temp probe connection**
* 7 = Green/Black = Temp probe connection**
* 8 = Black = Ground*
o Common to Pin 9
* 9 = Light Green = Reverse Dim Inhibit
o Common to Pin 8, +12V from reverse lights to disable dimming
* 10 = Gray = Microphone
o OnStar
* 11 = Dark Green/White = keypad signal (out)
o OnStar - multiplexed signal
* 12 = Light Green = keypad +5v supply (in)
o OnStar
* 13 = Yellow = +12V switched (ignition)*
* 14 = Yellow/Black = Green LED signal
o OnStar - apply 12v to light LED.
* 15 = Brown/White = Red LED signal
o OnStar - apply 12v to light LED.
* 16 = = day/night signal to LH outside mirror
o If you have a dimmable mirror, the rearview mirror can dim it with this and pin 5
So I took to old mirror off and took down the sunroof switch bezel to access the wiring. Snipped the mirror wires (no connector) and pulled the mirror out. I installed the new mirror, it fit the shoe fine but I had to find a #8 machine screw to lock it into place. Ran the wires up into the headliner and spliced in
Car yellow -> pin 13 power
Car black -> pin 8 ground
Car green -> pin 9 inhibit
good info thanks.
The link above has great info on the mirrors. I have switched all mine out to the newer Gentex models with temp and compass (7 pin connectors). These mirrors can be found in other cars as well, it doesn't have to come from a GP, just go to a local salvage yard and look around. Just make sure to to get the connector with it and swap the terminals as shown. I personally wouldn't go with an Onstar mirror, no need to have a bulkier mirror with useless button on it.
