So I brought my '00 GTP into the shop this week for an oil change and a sticker, and I asked them to check my exhaust system because I could tell there was a leak. Turns out my 17 year old cat back was rotted out and needed to be replaced, so they went ahead and replaced the entire cat back (thankfully they kept the stock tips, which I like). They put on brand new AP Exhaust mufflers (700298/700300) and resonator (700293).
I'm being very nit picky, but in all honesty I haaaate the way my exhaust sounds now. It's too quiet for my taste and the little noise that it does make kind of sounds like diarrhea. My previous setup was stock mufflers, a resonator, and a 3 inch ZZP downpipe. I absolutely loved the deep, raspy growl from the oem mufflers. The AP mufflers they put on were around $60 a piece. I looked up brand new oem ones and they're like $220 each which isn't really worth it. Still, most aftermarket mufflers for the 3800s I've heard on YouTube sound crummy to me. I know it's hard to get a good tone out of the 3800, but I felt that the stock Pontiac mufflers did the best job.
Would it be worth checking a junkyard for used GT/GTP '97-'03 mufflers? I know the '04-'07 mufflers for the GT/GTP were similar too, and I'm guessing the Bonneville SLE/SSEI mufflers are the same or similar. That or are there affordable, better sounding aftermarket mufflers out there that I don't know about? Or should I just suck it up and keep this system? The car has 135k miles, a 3.5" pulley setup, and it's a bit rusty. I can get at least a couple more years out of it, hopefully more because I love this car. I attached a link of the new exhaust system and one of the original one when I first got the car (minus the ZZP DP). Please let me know what you think! Thanks!
