Hey guys, just recently picked up a 2006 Grand Prix GT. Freakin' love it. However, the car does have a few hiccups I've gotta take care of, one of them being an airbag error.

So, here's the story. I first noticed a red airbag warning light showing up in the dashboard. It would come and then go, didn't seem to have any sort of rhyme or reason to it. Whatever, I'll worry about it later.

Forward to taking my girlfriend around in it for the first time. Everything is great, until the light comes back again. A little playing around with it lead me to realize that whenever this airbag light is on, it won't detect my girlfriend in the passenger seat (pass. bag will not turn on, nor will seatbelt light illuminate).

It's pretty sporadic, and I'm not really sure what I should expect to do in terms of fixing it. I'm going to have a shop program a key fob for me this week, I'm also going to have them check into this light.

Just in case they try to screw me on parts/repairs, I was just gonna try to get a general idea of what you guys thought it could be. A certain sensor? Maybe a system reset might be enough to fix it? I'd love to hear from anybody with any experience on the matter.

By the way...first Grand Prix I've owned in 3 years...I'm back baby

under the seat is a yellow plug, unplug it and put it back on a few times. some times its gets dirty and needs to be cleaned.

the seat belt light could be the wire from the latch part to under the seat. that wire can become chafed and wear through to bare wire.

Thanks for the reply, Scotty. I know what yellow plug you're talking about, I'll definitely try cleaning that. Not sure what 'latch' wire you're referring to, though.

If it helps at all, I'm pretty sure the two symptoms are stemming from the same problem. For example, the seatbelt light will only work when the error light is off (so the pass. airbag will turn on). When the airbag light is on, and the seat won't detect a passenger, the seatbelt light will then not work, until the error light goes away.

Did you ever figure this out? I just bought a 2008 and has the same issue. Very random and seems to happen more when I have my bag in the passenger seat.

I tried to take the yellow connection under the passenger seat like Scotty suggested and could not get it apart, but wiggled it good and pushed it together tight at lunch and have not seen the air bag light since. Fingers crossed!

Yep SRS plugs usually have a CPA (connector position assurance, per GM) that works like a safety pin on a hand grenade. Different color than the connector, probably red. That has to come out first then the connector can be taken apart. Like the ones where headlight harnesses connect to the body harness.
All Grand Prix, all the time. 69 Model J, 99 GT & GTP coupes. All junk, haha.

Yes there was a red teather down there. Wonder if that was the OP problem?

Didn't cross them hard enough. Light can back on the am. Can I take that connection apart without the airbag going off? Do I have to disconnect the battery?

Still playing with my 2008 airbag light every once in a while. Checked the connections under the seat. Pulled a passenger sensing code a while ago. Can't remember the number and also used a tech 2 to reset re zero the system a few times. Off more than on lately so not really bothersome.

When the light is on I find I can push my fingernails into left seam of the passenger seat and light will go off in like 5 sec.

Right near where the cross seam hits it.

Any one know what's under the cover there. Have not had it off yet as the seat heater works and don't want to screw that up.
