99-2000 and you will be good.

There is nothing wrong with a 04-07 supercharged car. They just have different qwerks than the pervious gen cars. Yes they have electronic throttle bodies and slightly different setup but that doesnt make them bad.

But I would agree with buickman that the 99-00 cars are one of the sweet spot years. Most of the kinks are fixed from 97-98 and that they were the last 2 years before they siwtched up the computers for cat diag and emission testings.

The same typical problems plague the 97-05s, lim,coolant elbows, valve cover gaskets, SC besides that it's a older used car, you gotta expect to do maintenance on it,

04+ (esp 06+ with all the nifty little chrome trims, lol) GPs are way nicer and much quieter inside, fewer creaks and such... and as Red said, older car (99/00, ect.) vs 04+ probably be a little more maintenance just due to the age. And, 6th gens have a lot more rust issues/rust prone than 7ths - if you live in the salt belt that could be a concern. I'd never get another 6th gen to DD, but that's just my opinion.

04/05 still had plastic intake gaskets, many of those have been replaced, but not all. 05+ had the aluminum oil pan I believe.

And with the 04+ S/C you get the GenV M90 which makes 20 more hp stock, so there's that bonus too.

As far as tuning, 04s and I believe 05s are easily tune-able, and some 06s you cans swap 05 PCMs into.

IMO, if you can get an 05 PCM to work in an 06 - 06 would be the best overall year. Aluminum subframe and oil pan, metal intake gaskets, black interior w/ white stitching instead of pewter, chrome trimmings, nicer rims (IMO) - harder to find HUDs than 04/05s, but easier than 07s.

If you have a preference for some of the 'rarer' colors - Polo Green was only offered in 04, Fusion Orange was 04/05, Burmuda Blue was 05/06, Midnight Blue was 07/08 only.

It's a pretty opinionated question. Get what you like. Only thing you really need to know are the mechanical issues of the 6th and 7th generation GP's.

No transmission is really better.

Only the comp g model will have different gearing of 3.29 instead of the standard 2.93. 2003+ cars will have the better 4th gear and updated computer controlled system but will still fail the same way all the other due. Power will break them and so does normal wear, burned up clutches, bad solenoids, seals etc etc.

The series 3 motor is actually a series 2 block with different rods and pistons. Then the top half has a larger supercharger, different intake manifold and throttle body. Of course there are small changes aswell from being a new model but that's really not something worth diving into.
