I just found a nice 97 GTP in the junk yard. Engine is pretty decent and intact. I'm gonna grab all the parts for a top swap for my 97 SE. This is my spare/play vehicle so I'm gonna take my time and try to be pretty meticulous. What is the recommended way of cleaning all the parts (heads, intake, SC, fuel rail/injectors, TB, etc)? Also, which parts can be painted? Should I use POR-15 on anything?

Hope you pick up the transmission out of it too...because your '97 vacuum power trans is gonna last through maybe one WOT run before it turns to dust. Cleaning parts though...I use Chem-dip.

Can a simple weekend warrior get enough chem-dip to clean the supercharger and intake manifold? I don't see a 5-gal being big enough to soak them in.

Buy a parts washer for like $150 then you are golden.

If I used chem-dip on the supercharger or the heads, what would I have to replace? I'm sure there is stuff that won't survive.

I pour it into an old Windex bottle and spray away...it works.

Clean the outside of the charger only. Inside the compression chamber and the needle bearings you don't want to mess with. Cleaning the compression chamber will only mean it won't seal up as well.
Clean the LIM with purple power or simple green.
Clean the heads with some brake cleaner. Wipe of excess first than then finish them up.
Nick.. you suggesting he grab the 4T65 and transplant into a 4T60 car?

Even though it's all black inside the supercharger? The heads I don't feel as bad about dipping. I'm already working on the tranny exchange.

The heads will accept dipping.. I'd leave as much oil on them until you plan to use them though. Cast iron can rust easily with any moisture.
On the charger.. I'm only saying compression chamber. If you pull the rotors and tape over the bearings.. then go ahead on the inlet and port it to clean.. but don't clean the compression chamber. That crud exists with the rotors and helps them seal for better performance.

I'm confused. You mentioend it was a 97 GTP in the first post. Which means it has a 3.8L supercharged motor.
All 3.8L GM motors from 87-08 have cast iron heads. BTW..each head without rockers will weight ~35lbs.

It's the same as any other 3800 car.
Cast iron. The Alummy heads weigh a max of 20 pounds fully assembled last I checked. And ya...I suggested he swap the 4T65E into his 4T60E car...because we all know how well the vacuum transmission holds up to modding.
It doesn't.

i just took the heads off my scrap car, and ya there prolly closer to 35 pounds lol
