Well, it has been awhile since I have had to work on my car. Yes, I have been putting off replacing the oil pan gasket. Now, the leak is more noticeable. I see oil gathering on the frame. The leak is not coming from the valve covers since I replaced the gasket awhile back thanks in part to the support from fellow members on this forum. I can see some leakage from the front of the manifold. I feel confident in replacing manifold gasket with kit from GM ($48.00) along with SC gaskets ($9), two coolant elbows ($15) and o-ring kit for fuel lines ($48).

I just feel a little uncomfortable tackling the oil pan gasket. Do I just take it to the shop or is this something one can handle with the help of a neighbor. Any advice is appreciated.

Not a clue. However, I did some searching for you and didn't turn up much. Though, I swear that torqueautomotiv or someone did a write up somewhere:

Well, get under there and check out the bolts. Check out the clearance to get at them. Maybe think about how much easier it would be to crank the engine up a few inches. Look like you can get the pan out?

Then it's a slightly bigger job than you hoped. So, you could pull the engine and work on it on a stand or remove parts as you go in from the bottom, I guess.

this is my concern...I read somewhere that an engine stand is needed to support the engine.

I decided to let my GM mechanic friend perform the work---it took him about 6.5 hours...He is absolutely fantastic and meticulous about his work...He serviced the injectors, throttle body, replaced---both belts, LIM gasket, v/c gaskets, changed the oil and flushed the radiator. All parts were GM OEM replacements...I get a very favorable discount when buying parts from GM. The engine looks better than new...My next project is the oil pan gasket.

Oil pan gasket is definitely not fun, some people find it easiest to just pull the engine, but it can be done by ratcheting the engine or dropping the subframe, just a bit tighter that way.

I know it's quite the job...my mechanic friend says I should change the oil pressure sending unit and some other gasket nearby.
