Thread: I want really big brakes!

Ok everyone. Don't Care if its overkill I am gonna find a way to make it work. I currenty have a 98 GTP with GXP brakes front and rear. Its just not enough. Its gonna cost me a fortune but I like spending money! (Just put a steering wheel (and airbag) from a 2012 corvette in, little over $600 but its awesome! So far only the volume works on the steering wheel controls but hoping to achieve full functionality soon... yes that includes PADDLE SHIFT! Don't worry if I can get that working with my 4t65e-hd I will do a write up!) Already off topic. Wrote Brembo about making a custom hat for the 2 piece CTS-V rotors. Ill update if I hear back. That being said I am not planning on putting in the Cadi breaks in anymore. My focus has shifted to the Camaro Z28 15.5 in Carbon Ceramic rotor. Also with 6 piston caliper. Caliper looks the same as CTS-V but obviously bigger. Still don't know if it has the same mounts but will be finding out soon. I do know the aluminum hat will need the same remachining as the CTS. I am hoping I can talk (buy) Brembo into selling me "blank" aluminum hats. Everyone cross your fingers. Does anyone know off hand how much deeper the hat section is on the rear rotor vs the front on GP to accomodate for E-brake? I want to put the same 6 piston caliper on the rear and likewise the same 15.5 inch rotor but I am curious to see if I would be able to use the front 15.5 in rotor but mount the rotor section to a hat section for the rear to try to make a functional e brake. Annnnnd GO!

So I think our real dilemma here is going to be getting Brembo to let us mix and match and customize parts with their name on them. I have a feeling for the same reasons you don't want to sell that custom bracket. I think there could b some potential liability issues with allowing people to refab something they didn't design to be oem. How hard or expensive would it be to cnc our own hats? I feel like that would solve all our problems. We would need to know the inside diameter of the Brembo ceramic disc where it mounts to the hat then just make everything else on the hat to the specs of a factory grand prix hat. We should then be able to keep factory parking brake functionality. Am I right? It sounds really good in my head.

Can you actually order those rotors? Can't find them on any websites... guessing it's a dealer only thing right now. Is it possible to buy just the brake disk and not the hat?

They are amazing! Have you or anyone ever taken apart a 2 piece rotor? Is it a nightmare?

Got a part number for those calipers?

Gm parts direct is selling them for ONLY 1,301 a piece on those rotors. Lol what a deal. So I guess I may have to wait a little while for them to release calipers for sale. Maybe I will get somewhere with Brembo. Fingers are crossed! I am definitely gonna make this happen. Leave it to me to want 10 grand worth of brakes in a 2,000 dollar car haha.

I do have the money. For what? Because I love it. Why are any of us on here spending money on our cars? Because we love them. Of coarse it's not "worth" it. None of it is. A gtp in great condition is still only ever going to be a late 90's pontiac. Another reason to do it... factory cts-v 14.6 in rotor weighs about 26 lbs. Correct me if I am wrong. But I think 15.5 inch carbon ceramic rotor is only about 9 lbs. So 5 grand- save approx 60 lbs of unsprung rotational weight (if I can figure out the rear situation. I'll take it. Not to mention how freaking awesome it will look! Also Brembo says this rotor should outlast the car. Hopefully that doesn't translate to having to buy 500 dollars worth of brake pads every three months.

I do... and it will. Just went to the dealer. Went to high school with the parts guy at local suss buick gmc. I have 1 rotor on its way from memphis. 1526.01. Not terrible. If I can't make it work for some reason he will let me return it. As long as I don't take it apart. So gonna get some measurements off it and get some measurements from a new stock rotor. My co worker says with the right info he can design a hat for me on autocad. Next step will be working on finding a caliper. My parts buddy thinks with a vin number he should b able to get it. Then just need to find a local cnc shop. Also for you guys running the 4 piston front cts-v calipers brembo says they should be releasing carbon ceramic 2 piece rotors for the gt500 late this yr.
