I need advice on the best way to remove the assembly when it has a broken spring.
What I'm mainly worried about is what will happen when I lift the car and the pressure on the spring is lessened. Not to mention all of the movement and banging around I'm going to have to do to get it out. Is this one of those jobs where it's better left to the professionals?

There shouldn't be any problems. Buy two quick struts. That way you change the whole assembky

I had this same problem on my wife's GT. I just replaced the sping because the strut was still good. I got a used spring for $20 and a shop charged me $60 to compress and install the spring. Cheaper then 2 new quick struts, however quick struts look like an easy bolt in.

like everyone else said its not a safety problem at all, the spring is trapped in the strut. jack the car up, remove it.

If you're just changing the spring go buy a spring compressor for $20

Spring compressors are good tools to have. What good is $20 going to do you when you can't get to the parts store to rent them?

I'm gonna buy a new spring compressor soon hopefully. Instead of the 2 pieces one on each side of the spring I'm going to get the one that you put on there and use an impact and it compresses the spring evenly.

My question is: how do you know your strut is good and what criteria are you using to determine the dampening of your strut?
Just because a strut is not leaking does not mean the strut is doing its job. Another thing to consider is the spring. Springs will fatigue over time. Not all springs retain the same spring rate from vehicle to vehicle. By replacing a single spring rather than replacing them as a set, you run the risk of changing the ride characteristics and handling by changing the spring rate, side to side, on a given axle.

It's a $2,000 stock GT that my wife drives from A to B. it doesn't have to be perfect it's just gotta work. I don't think we did too bad for $80

monroe has a 120 dollar rebate on 4 quick struts through the end of april and at rock auto and it only cost me $304...just my 2 cents

I went ahead and bought the two full assemblies last night from AutoZone because I need my car come Monday morning.
Well, off to the garage. If I run into any issues with removal or install today, I'll be back. I'm using the write up on here so I don't anticipate any major issues. Thanks to all who responded.

Monroe Quick Struts are a Godsend...LOVE those things! I did the fronts on my wife's van last summer in about an hour...most of that spent on the top bolts because of the metal plate that extends over the engine bay on a Montana...stupid van...lol Hope things went well for you!
