If you gutted the strut how are you going to stabilize the body to the suspension? It will be just like standing on a ball at all four corners.

That's really the only way to do it with these. The coil spring sits on top of the strut. The only way to really bag these is replace the coil spring with an air spring. Even the top dollar kits have the same basic design that Ricky is doing.

Yes but they still have the shaft to tie it all together. The shaft goes through the center of the airbag. You cant just put a balloon on top of a stick and expect it to only move up and down, see what i'm saying.
most bags are just a bag replacing the spring.
there are a few that are completely independent and use JUST a bag, but a bag over strut setup has become pretty much the norm.
Yea the nicer setups have the struts that go through them, But I know some have just the bag. Soon after I get it up and working I want to figure out a way to put a stand alone strut/damper in there to help stabalize a bit more and help with bouncing.

Yea I was reading up on those. It wont work with the set up im going with now. But I thought that would be a good idea for the bags that go over the struts and/or coilovers for more options on spring rates and different valving and such
A very small update for anyone interested.
I got my 60' DOT approved 1/2" airline in with 4 90* brass compression fittings, along with a 1/2" schrader valve for when I do test fitting.
Doing a little mock up of how to do the top mounts.
Going to have to file down some of the very bottom plastic piece to try to get it to sit straight as possible.

I havnt drove a GP with coilovers and havnt drove a GP with bags but Im willing to bet the ride would be better than the coilovers and for ND roads the ability to raise and lower with the flip of a switch would be a huge plus. Granted you could just buy a bag setup but if this works out for less than the cost of coilovers why in the hell not!??????
since the bag isnt stabilized by a strut its going to have a lot of flex. it's gonna be great for dropping the car, but it wont take corners nearly as well as a coilover car because of the struts...
