ok, i did something really stupid while trying to remove my driver side front wheel bearing, I managed to get the assembly out of the knuckle, but the damn cv shaft is stuck in the bearings....

heres the problem, i tried smashing the cv shaft stud while pulling on the bearing. i messed up the threads.

problem #1 the hub assembly is still stuck with the cv shaft.
problem #2 I ruined the threads at the begining of the stud.

what are my options? i thought of getting a tap and (dye)? set
or do i need a whole new cv shaft? can you buy just the outer cv shaft?

please help my car is jacked up in my driveway and I need me wheels!!

    LG

i would buy a new cv shaft seeing how you messed up the threads.

you were to suppose to have the nut threaded on a few turns and then smack it with a rubber mallet and pop it out.

Take a small belt sander, or grinder and carefully taper around the end and remove most of the damaged threads. Use some oil and start the nut back on the good threads.

If it works you can work on getting the hub off of the splined shaft.
Brush off any corrosion on the splines, Heat it up with a torch, then quickly cool it with water or some penetrating oil. tap the hub with a hammer and pull, Repeat as necessary.
If it does not work maybe you can borrow a large set of hub pullers.

Worst case you have to buy a new CV axle to go with your new wheel bearing. Next time use a large brass punch or a block of hardwood instead of hitting the threaded end dead on.
