    Hey all,

After seeing so many raves about R1 Concepts rotors for our cars, I bought a set of 4 of their E-Line series with pads from ebay. I put the rears on yesterday, and took it for a test drive just a few minutes ago.

Well, they have a sort of metal on metal grinding noise when driving, and then the pads make noise when the brakes are applied. I'm 95% sure I didn't mess anything up when putting them on, I've done brakes on GP's at least a dozen times. Another thing, is that the pads are dusting all over the ****in place on the rotor. I'd say half of the pad surface on the rotor has brake dust on it. Anybody have any suggestions?

Do I have to break them in a certain way? I was trying to break them in on the test drive doing gradual stops from different speeds, do I have to just let them settle in some? Thanks all!

That had crossed my mind on the drive, but I didn't think that they would both go bad at the same time. They were fine with my old brakes. That better not be the case, I just freaking painted the calipers!

well I wasn't sure which one was bad as the drivers side really didn't seem to work all that well and I thought the pass side was sticking so @ $25 a side I got both

What kind of pads are you using? It sounds like the pads are tearing up. I know with the slotted and drilled R1s I have, they dusted up a bit in the beginning, but once the pads settled, the brake dust has been nonexistant.

I am using Posi Quiet ceramic brakes pads with my R1 Rotors.

I have to say I highly doubt it would be the rotors being bad. Do you feel the brakes pulsate or anything when you apply them? Indicating a warped rotor or anything? I would check your pads and see what kind of condition they are in. And are they new pads or ones you had from your prior setup?

Well, my dad drove it earlier tonight and said it wasn't making as much noise like I heard. He did say the pads are leaving a noticeable amount of brake dust. I think I'll just drive it for a few days and see if it gets any better. Thanks all!

Edit : I'm not certain that my calipers are stuck up, because I hear the pads coming in contact with the rotors when I press the brakes, and letting off when I release. But....I'll observe over this week and see in a few days

I can tell you that if you are using semi metalic pads, they will leave ALOT more dust than the ceramic pads. I would bet you have the semi metalic which will also make make some noise with these rotors.

    ^^^^^^ What he said.

If they are metallic, they are gonna be a bit more nosiey than ceramic, not by much but enough to notice. And the dusting is night and day compared between the two.

I am glad to hear the noise has lessened. It might just be the pads trying to "bed" against the new rotors. Metallic pads are gonna be more crunchy the first time or two out. If they are metallic truly, you are always gonna have that dusted look on your rims till you switch over to Ceramics.

Yeah, they're definitely quieted down today. It's just they dust like an SOB though!!!!!!! The pads I got were whatever pads that came with the rotors. So, I think I'm going to buy a better set of ceramic pads before I do the fronts over the weekend. Thanks for all your input guys!

yeah they're definitely clicking. Pretty funny when I hit the brakes and it sounds like 4 million people are snapping their fingers.

Hummmm ok dumb question, but I know with mine, when I ride on the highway and I am up against the barrier wall I can hear the air in the drilled holes. Not sure if sounds like clicking, but I dont hear when I am out in the open but when I am up along side another car or a barrier wall or something I can hear that.

The only other thing I can think of would be tearing them completely down and then rechecking all bushings and clips that hold in the pads. And then regrease the edges of the pads that rest in the clips and regrease the pins as well that go into the calipers. Also check to make sure your rims arent possibly rubbing against the caliper, that is if you got the 12" brake upgrade and still have your stock 16" rims.

That's the best I can come up with. Sorry to hear you are having such a time with them.

Thanks! I actually haven't done the fronts yet...this is all for the rears lol! the clicking noise is only when I put on the brakes, and I can only hear it when I'm driving through a neighborhood or by a shoulder barrier on the side of the road like you said. It doesn't bother me much, I have no loss of braking power or anything kind of performance issue.

Well at least yours don't squeak and grind. haha I am having hella trouble with my car and I just got it 2 weeks ago. Going to get some quick struts to see if that will fix the ungodly clunking in the rear, and who knows what the hell I am going to do with the breaks.

What are your brakes doing? Which Rotors did you wind up getting? And what pads are you using on them?

E Line Rotors (Diamond Slotted and Drilled) and semi Metallic pads, and whenever I am light on the brakes, they squeak like no other. I believe its only the fronts, because I put the rears on and had them on a day before the fronts, and there was no squeaking. Maybe they just need broken in? IDK

Well I can not comment on the metallic pads, I have ceramic myself, but I know my R1's are not making any noise like that. Its hard to say, but I would lay money on the pads more than anything else being your problem.
