Thread: Possible Bad CV Axle?

Hi All,

I have an 04 GTP CompG with 100,200 miles on the clock. I just had the front struts replaced and the driver side outer tie rod needed to replaced with it.
Anyways, when i turn the wheel in a stationary position I get a clicking and crunching noise. I told the place that replaced the struts about it and before they fixed it said that my strut mount was binding and all that jazz and said that it should take that clicking away. Well I still have a clicking and crunching coming from the front driver side. Does this sound like a CV Joint going to crap? If I understand what a CV axle does it is it allows the car to have power while turning? Am I understanding this correctly.

Any knowledge would be greatly appreciated. What would be a good brand CV Axle be. I have Napa, Car Quest, and Advanced Auto Parts available to me, unless online purchase would be required. I just spent 600 bucks on new struts and another 557 on new tires. =) These costs are adding up.

thats not what it does. it doesnt sound like a cv joint/axle is your problem. if im correct sometimes ball joint/tie rods will cause the clicking when turning at low speeds. the CV joint and axle transmit power from the transmission, to the wheels thru the joint (so it can bend), and the axel which connects to your hub assembly which your brakes, and wheel are mounted on. now usually a bad CV joint wont click. i actually have to replace mine because it sounds like a humming or thumping noise while driving. on many cars both will eventually need to be replaced around 100,000 miles. another way to tell if your CV joint is bad, is take the wheel off, look at the large rubber boot by the transmission on the axel, and see if the seal broke or its flinging grease everywhere. im not sure if any of this info will help you or not but hopefully it does.

now can you hear the sound from one specific side or can you not tell?

I can just be parked in my parking spot and turn my wheel and here the click/crunching noise. When I got the new struts, they replaced the outer tie rod on the driver side. That is also the same side the noise is still coming from? Perhaps a Ball Joint then. The noise is only on the driver side. Seems like they should have inspected the noise further. They had all that ripped apart when the new struts went in and also for the alignment. Hmm

i also just had struts replaced on my 2001 GTP and also have the exact same noises coming from the front left just sitting in place turning the wheel. did you figure out what it was? thanks!

If they are new struts it is possible that the mounts need to break in. Although the only way to really check all of the stuff from above is to take the wheel off and look.
