It looks like there is a large nut that holds the front rotor onto a spindle, and it has been a while that I have dealt with this type of a rotor set-up. I would iimagine that I will have to loosen the nut, and the bearings for the wheel are within the rotor?

The rotors are warped, and there is still plenty of rotor left so I will have them turned down. How hard is it to get the spindle nut off, and are there are tricks or things to watch out for in doing this?

The rotor will come right off after you remove the caliper. Don’t touch that big nut.

I love when people call my work asking me this....

But the canyon trucks DO require that to get the rotors off FYI.

And so does this car! I have done brake jobs in the past on many of my own cars, and the rotors "float" so that all that you have to do is take the caliper off, and the rotor will come right off as it is held in place by the studs for the wheel.

These rotors are 1 piece, with the studs as part of the rotor. The large nut is holding the rotor onto a spline...as the rotor is splined as well...which SUCKS because I think I am going to need a puller to get it off as it ain't moving...even by tapping around the rotor on the back side with a rubber mallet.

So with that in mind, any recommendations of getting this off without having to pop for a set of gear pullers?

    You're wrong.

Thats my suggestion because there is no such thing as a 11.7" gear puller that i've seen...

Thats the picture and specs of your front rotor.

It is NOT a hub assy, just hit it till it comes off.

If you touch the axle nut you're doing it wrong.

I have an '05 too and just changed the front rotors this spring. Mine float on the studs like others described. It might be rusted to the center aligning ring. Just hit the rotor with a mini sledge to get it off.

Hit it with a bfh, turning the rotors will only help for so long, the vibration will come back. Just get some new rotors.

I assume the removal procedure is the same for the 2008 as well. My question is, simply removing the caliper does not free the rotor. It allows access to the pads, but the hub appears to still be held in place by the Caliper support . Am I just looking at this wrong?

Well, after you remove the actual “caliper”. The caliper bracket/mount that remains needs to be removed also. It is held by two bolts on the back side, the bolts come out easy if you have a breaker bar. IIRC they are 15mm bolts, then the rotor isn’t held by anything. Some times they stick in place so tap the edge with a hammer or something.

Completed a full brake job, front and rear, yesterday and it went very well. I was surprised by the ease of it. The front rotors are held on by lock washers.

    Tools Required:
    Front

    • 15mm socket
    • 15mm wrench
    • c-clamp
    • 5lb sledge (if necessary) to loosen rotors
    • brake cleaner

    Rear

    • 14mm socket
    • 13mm socket
    • piston tool
    • 5lb sledge (if necessary) to loosen rotors
    • brake cleaner
