97 Pontiac Grand Prix GT
Brake pedal goes to the floor and no leaks. I'm attempting to replace the master cylinder. After removing the assembly I've run into a problem and need help.
The master cylinder is attached to the ABS modulator with (2) torx bolts. No way to get a socket on the torx bolts because they are covered by the plastic casing on the ABS modulator. I removed the bottom cover of the ABS modulator revealing 3 large gears against 3 shaft gears. All gears are under tension load so I decided not to remove the gears but cannot see a way to remove the cover that is blocking access to the Torx bolts holding the master cylinder to the ABS module. Can this job be done in my garage without the use of a scanner? This is my daughters car and not driveable so I'm in a pickle. This is the first time in 5 years of owning this car with over 200,000 miles that I've been stumped. Please help.
Update: I determined that the car has the Delphi ABS-VI system. After deciding not to replace the master cylinder, I reinstalled the abs/master cylinder unit and proceeded to throughly bleed the braking system using a method of submerging the end of the drain tube in a clear jar 1/3 filled with break fluid. This allowed me to bleed the brakes without assistance. First the air was bled out of the front and rear bleeder valves on the abs and then at each wheel brake location. The system was successfully bled without the use of a scanner and the brakes work perfectly.
