I have a 98 grand prix GT I bought that has a clunk (sounds just like a strut clunk) in the front right wheel. There is also some play when you pull the top of the tire in and out. There is no whining like a wheel bearing. Is this a CV shaft issue or could it still be a wheel bearing? Also, there is some damage in the right front from a recent deer hit (there's still hair stuck in the A-arm!).

An help would be greatly appreciated!!

Wheel bearings don't always whine. Does the bottom of the tire do the same as the top? I would be willing to bet that it is a wheel bearing. Or you could have a really really bad ball-joint.

I haven't jacked it up and checked the bottom. I don't think it's a ball joint since there is no play front to back...just top to bottom. It maybe is the wheel bearing. Do you have to buy the whole hub assembly to replace the bearings on these?

The only way to really check a ball-joint is to put a load on it while its on a hoist/off the ground. That requires putting a pri-bar or channel lock on it and try to move the joint. You really can't tell when its on the ground, but it does make a noise. If you do get it hoisted though, grab the left and right side of the tire and try to shake it side to side. It might be a tie-rod.

Is there any play in the steering wheel?
