05 Grand Prix. I have play in the driver's side wheel when I push in/out from both the 12/6 positions and 3/9 positions. I just replaced the wheel bearing/hub assembly less than 200 miles ago. The old bearing was definitely bad, I couldn't rotate it at all by hand when I got it off the car. It was the first wheel bearing I've ever replaced, so I'm relatively new to this. Is it possible the new wheel bearing is also bad or is it more likely there is something going on with the CV axle? When looking underneath the car and having someone push on the wheel, I see movement of the outer CV axle joint/boot while the steering knuckle, ball joint and tie rod all seem relatively stable. I can see slight movement between the bearing and what I think is the rubber seal between the bearing and bearing housing. Thanks in advance for any advice.

sounds like you got a bad new part.
that, or one of the other parts is loose.

By having play at both 12/6 and 3/9 that is typically a bad bearing. Then when you looked underneath and only saw the CV moving, that confirmed it is a bad or not fully tightened bearing.
The CV axle should not be the issue as the bearing is where the wheel mounts. The CV goes through the bearing and has the nut on the end of it. Since you put it in so recently, I would double check the three bolts that hold the bearing to the knuckle (13mm) and then also check the nut for the CV Axle (35mm). That nut should be approximately 120-130lbs of force tight aka really tight. If neither of those are loose, I'd head for the warranty replacement on the bearing because there should be at least a 200 mile warranty.

Thanks. It was in fact the wheel bearing. I replaced it today and there is no longer play in the wheel.

Sadly ..the bearings in these cars seem underengineered. I had a lifetime warranty on Moog at Advance at one time and replaced something like 8 different ones off that one warranty. I will mention that not all those bad bearings were on my car

Wow. I'm still rolling on the originals on the rears at 230K. I had a shop replace the passenger side front at 180K.

I have one original rear bearing left on my GT at 448K. These cars eat front bearings, just a fact a life. I'm seeing the best results from the Timken bearings I run. SKF and MOOG might also be a good choice. Only had to replace a few Timkens up front over the years.
