    Hi all,

My regal has a loud hum coming from one of the rear wheels. It sounds a lot like truck tire. When i bought the car I figured it was a bad tire. I had all 4 tires replaced and the noise didnt change in tone or pitch.
I recently had the car safety inspected. While they pointed out a front wheel bearing would probably need to be replaced within the next year, they said the rears seemed fine.

Any ideas? Ive tried loading the wheels up by turning, doesn't change much. I dont really trust the shop that inspected the car, and i know for a fact they werent looking for anything past obvious failures.

Take it to a shop you do trust, have them check that the wheels were properly balanced when the tires were changed, check out the rear suspension - not just the shocks, control arms, ball joints, anything that can move that might be stuck, and anything that shouldn't move but might be.

Jack up the rear with both tires off the ground. Push the top in and pull the bottom with your hands at the 12 and 6 o'clock position on the tire. Give it a few try's rocking it in/out and see if you feel any play. If you feel any movement then I'd suspect that wheel bearing.

I am going to presume the hum is only while driving and is speed related? These are key diagnostic points.

a hum from a wheel has generally 2 causes
weird tire wear can sometimes mimic a bad wheel bearing (which you eliminated by replacing tires)
    and a bad wheel bearing.

even though changing loading doesn't seem to change the sound that doesn't rule out the wheel bearing

While the shop that checked it may have said its fine or found no play in it, that doesn't mean it is in good condition, and a lumpy bearing can deteriorate very quickly once it starts, so keep an eye.. or ear on it

I had it put on a lift when i first bought it in late november. The rear suspension was tight. I didnt check Hub all that closely because I thought it was a tire, but I did check the trailing arms, ball joints, swaybar links etc because of a bit of clunking. Everything back there is nice and tight. The only thing i didnt check was the strut top mounts
