My '06 GP has the in-dash 6CD changer Monsoon system but does not have a factory XM receiver installed. I've read that all GM head units from 2002 on up can control an XM receiver. I don't want to add XM but rather I want to add a hard wired iPod/iPhone interface. The interface I'm considering is the USASPEC PA15-GM. This interface apparently utilizes the XM bands on the head unit and incorporates the steering wheel buttons to control some of the iPod functions. Does anyone have experience installing one of these interfaces on a 2006? I don't want to replace the head unit with aftermarket unless absolutely necessary.

My question is: Do I need to have the head unit reprogrammed for it to recognize the XM bands and thereby the iPod interface, or is it plug and play?

    Any other tips are welcomed.

    Thanks in advance!

Same here and you cant. As far as I know there is no aux input board on these radios. Which means that you are going to have to buy a new radio. Unless someone else on here knows how to hook one up.

2006 with a Monsoon system and a 6-disc change DOES NOT HAVE XM RADIO. You cant splice into the XM signal like they did there since it does not exist. When you press the aux button on the radio nothing happens at all. Doesn't that mean there is no aux preamp board inside the radio? If there is then you should be able to add one in somehow but as far as I know you cant.

Welp, there ya go then, I have no clue. I guess an aftermarket radio is your only option. I have an 06 gt with the monsoon n when I bought it there was a different radio put in. Thats what id do then, just get the steering wheel interface n the onstar adapter harness if ya want the chimes. Theyre a little expensive but ebay is the best bet. Ik I wanted my steering wheel controls still n the metra axxess kit works good n is around $50 or so on there.

Yeah if you really want that iPod connection in your car. I have the 6 disc and just change the cds every couple weeks. Im really hoping someone else on here has figured out a way to add in an iPod adapter.

i did this to my factory HU. works. if you want, you can use the tape deck, cd, or the radio. radio wires are talked about on page 24 to 26 iirc, somewhere around there.

How you can add an aux input/mp3 player without an adapter - LS1TECH

Ahh there we go. That was going to be my other suggestion as my dad did this in his truck. Not the best idea but if you can figure it out then it should work.

Thanks everybody but I think my original question got lost. Again, I've read that ALL GM head units from 2002 to present are configured to operate an XM receiver whether one is installed or not. My understanding is that when XM is activated on a radio it comes up as an additional "Band" just like AM, FM1 or FM2. Assuming this is true I should just be able to plug the USASPEC PA15-GM harness adapter into the back of the head unit to get my iPod on the XM Band. My question is.....Does the head unit have to be reprogrammed by a dealer to set it up for XM since there was no factory XM installed when the car was new? My local dealer charges $105 to reprogram a head unit.

you need to search for the unlock code procedure there is a way to get around the dealer, but it your calling a GM tech number, giving a dealer code, they are on line, then pushing the # that show up on the locked radio. it will tell you what code to enter into the radio. its automated, so your not talking to any one.

XM works on the ID # thats in the radio. so signing up is as easy as a phone call.

I don't need to unlock the radio. I want to know if reprogramming the head unit is necessary to activate the XM circuitry in a head unit that never had a factory XM receiver originally installed.

Also with my 6disc monsoon I used a aai-gm12 for my iPod and aux input. I think it was a aai-gm12 I'll check to make sure

Edit: changed the thing I used to proper one. Also check out PAC audio website they have alot

if your stock radio dont have XM, it dont have XM, end of story. find a better stock radio with XM. or external cd player, then you can tap into that.

the unlocking is if you get a new radio (a stock one from another car) it will lock when you plug it in. then you'll need to unlock it. its a theft deal.

How do we know this? I've read elsewhere that it's a head unit programming issue and that the port just needs to be activated. This is what I'm trying to confirm.

each and every xm receiver has its own ID #,( thats how xm knows to turn it on or shut it off. you need to pay for it) your not installing anything like that if its not there from the factory, thats why its a xm ready radio. if its not there, its not there. and you dont have a xm antenna either mounted on your car.

    Scottydoggs,
I realize that. But I'm not even interested in XM. I don't want XM. I just want to hook an iPod interface to the XM port on the head unit and need to know if the port needs to be activated through some sort of reprogramming. But thanks for you help.

if your radio dont have it, it would be more work trying to install a cd port or what ever it is your after. unless your a certified wiring expert and we dont know that you are yet. like can you read, and understand a radio wire diagram, then solder to the boards, add switches, see where im going? not easy.

just find a stock used radio that suits your needs, then install it. or get a after market HU and call it a day.

or open it up and add the aux port to it. that makes a i pod work just fine. this whole deal costs less then $5 in parts. if you have solder and shrink tubes and a soldering iron already.

I really don't think you're reading what he's typing, he's wondering if his stereo does have XM and he just has to activate it, if so, how?
