I just installed a new Kenwood KDC-HD545U HeadUnit in my 04 GP and was wondering if there is a way to add an on off switch to my amp. I know it is possible, just trying to figure out what wire I need to run from the headunit to the amplifier.

    Thanks

I am a little surprised that you want to do this. I did this to one of my buddies cars. The wire that normally runs from the amp to the headunit goes to the switch. (switch instead of headunit) this way when you turn the switch on it then tells the amp to turn on.

Coolest one I've seen is in a friend of mines jeep. We used one of the fighter jet styled covered switches. He was running 4K rms watts to a pair of RE MT's and when they were on they would rattle the whole jeep even on the lowest setting. The switch was mostly installed so if he got a phone call or his ears got tired he could just flick the switch. We just ran the control wire to one side of the switch and more wire from the switch to the amps control line. Then mounted it to the dash. Works well and looks awesome.

its actually simple just get a switch and use the remote wire that your running from ur aftermarket amp and place the end of the wire on one of the switch terminals and then add another section of wire to the opposite end of the switch terminal ( cant be the same terminal or it wont work) and run that in to your wiring harness like it was originally.

Its amazing how everyone goes back and forth with something as simple as this. For all the people telling him to control it with the headunit, ask yourself does that kenwood have sub controls? To say every headunit has sub controls is like saying every grand prix is blown. If it does most kenwoods have it so if you hold the am button for a few seconds it will toggle the sub outputs but amp will remain powered. If that don't work your best bet is to leave the turn on wire which is the little blue wire from headunit to amp, somewere in that line put in a toggle switch. If you hook it up there as even if you forget to turn the subs off with the switch the radio will still power it down.

I've been running a switch forever. It's just more convenient.

Go from your remote wire to the middle (of the 3) on the switch. Then from whatever side of the switch back to where you plug in the Positive power wire to your amp. The side that you choose will decide which way you flip it to turn it on or off.

It's simple, and I'd do it to any system I own.
