Hi guys n gals GTPJOE here, reason for this post is i resently won a sweet cobra radar detector i believe model is xrs 9545 anyways i baught the GOOD windshield suction cupped mount n all the good stuff the cobra comes with the AC power cord "cig outlet power cord" anyways how do people when they turn the ignition on in the car have it wired up or something because i want it to turn on when i turn the car on and i dont want it to be pushed in and out when i turn the car on and off you see what im saying? do you have to hardwire it in to someplace and cut and splice the cig lighter cord or is there a "extension plug or something????? thanks guys

i just leave mine on or turn the switch off it takes 2 seconds. i would say u could prob hardwire it pretty easily though or simply wire a switch into whichever outlet u plug it into an just flip the switch

We used to use these when i worked in the install department "geeksquad"

We cut off the male end, stripped it, there's a ground and a +. We used these to utilize the fuse in the male end of the radar detector wire. Test the 2 wires because, on the older cords we used white was + and red was ground. I believe the second cigarette lighter on the center console is an accessory (at least it was on my old Buick). If it is it will only turn on when the key is turned. Otherwise you could tap it into the radio or tapping into the ignition switch would work.

I'd use a littlefuse add-a-circuit and hard wire it.

mines a 2000. yea u can make the tray look flush. my wire runs alongside the bezel on pass side visibly but then disappears into the ash tray. what i did was plug it in an then u can actually kinda wrap the wire back behind the plastic piece an close the door an the wire comes out under it. door closes fully an u cant tell at all that anything is plugged into it until u open it. hope that helps.

how can the cig lighter be unswitched power if with my key off and door closed etc. i push it in and the lighter gets hot and pops out... aka it must have power without being on.... correct??

    Screw the cig lighter idea.

Buy some extra wire, cut off the plug end on your existing wiring, lengthen the wires, hide the wiring in your headliner and down the passenger side a-pillar into the dash Either tap from a switch power source from the fuse box, or used the switched source from your acc power drop and then finally ground the other end. Simple as that and no clutter, nice and clean. Thats how I do it on my cars...
