I'm installing a trans cooler today and I noticed something that doesn't make any sense.

When I started the car this morning I noted the ambient temp versus the trans temp on the DIC. I'm in Canada so this is in C not F - apologies to our US members.

The ambient temp reads 14C while the trans temp reads 28C?????

I would expect the trans temp to be at or close to ambient since it sat all night. Seems the trans temp is reading significantly higher.

Is this supposed to happen? I wonder if this isa common problem and if this is why our transmissions "appear" to be running hot when it really isn't???

    2006 GXP. Stock.

    Anybody else notice this?.

    Thanks in advance. Toolmanz

But to be double the temp at first start up after its been sitting all night?

Yeah thats not going to happen.

I'd say somethings a little screwy here, possible bad sensor?

Ahhh true, didn't really read to well lol

Uhh, Hmmm... Could be a bad sensor. What does the dic say the tranny temp is?

Or is that what you are going off of?

That sounds logical that the sensor is bad. I will have a close look and see if there is anything that needs attention. I will let you know what I find.

The cooler is attached. Now for the plumbing. The top line out of the rad is the return - right?

    Thanks for the replies.

Its not as drastic as it sounds. 14*C is 57.2*F whereas 28*C is 82.4*F. That is a difference of 25*F. I've noted on mine that the trans fluid is always warmer than ambient, even at start up.

Ok guys I would say this is normal. Just think about it. your engine and trans is "covered and wrapped". Not only that but inside of both are fluids that reach up to 200-220+ degrees F. Even if your cars sits and cools all night it most likely will never be the same as the ambient.

Think about it like this... if you want to keep something warm you cover or wrap it up and it will stay warmer longer than just sitting it out on a counter top. Everything cools from the outside-in. The hood, fire wall, fenders, etc keep the warmpth in.
