I believe I asked this before, on the deceased GXP, and never got an answer.

I'm getting, at best, 21 MPG, and I can't remember the last time I saw a cloud of oil smoke. Is it possible for the DoD to turn itself off?

And i know I "shouldn't," but if I wanted to, how would I go about diagnosing the problem and reactivating it?

If there is a check engine light related to that system then it could be disabled.

Otherwise it should always be working in 3rd and 4th gear if nothing like that is happening or that it was disabled with a tune.

If you can't feel/hear it drop 4 cylinders then I'd want it on a scan tool to see if it's really happening.

The only check engine light on is a vacuum leak, but it was behaving the same before that happened. I've never really been able to fell/hear it, even on my Monte Carlo, where the DIC told me which mode it was in.

What sort of scan tool can I use while I'm driving?

Cylinder 7 is on the front bank on the far right side. 1/3/5/7 left to right on the front side.

"At best" means "45 mph in fourth gear on a surface road." Average is 17 at best. I used to average 22 on my LS4 Monte Carlo, which had the decency to tell me which mode it was in. Why that feature is missing from a more expensive car that is higher in the GM hierarchy is a mystery that will never be explained.

Can anyone tell me the name of a scan tool I can use while driving? And what I should look for on that scan tool?

you could pick up a bluetooth adapter and download the torque application. I'm not sure if it will say you are in 4 cylinder mode, but the adapter is about 20 bucks and there is a free version of torque.
