Hey everyone, I have a bit of an odd question. Is there any difference in the v6 exhaust from the v8?
The reason I ask, I have a friend in PA and his 06 GXP has failed inspection because of a couple of exhaust issues. Over the years he did something to the resonator and swapped out to Flowmasters as well so it’s hard to say what shape the exhaust system as a whole is in as I haven’t seen it in over a year. Dude was like a brother to me growing up and still is to this day. Anyway I sold my house a couple of months back so I have a little cash I can spare and I want to help him get his car back on the road so he and his wife don’t have to share hers anymore, but my knowledge of this platform is seriously lacking. I tried to find a catback system (even a stock kit) just because I don’t know what all is rusted and needs to be replaced so I was gonna replace it all but the only thing I could come across for the GXP was a $1000 Magnaflow unit and that won’t be happening.
My next option is to find each individual piece and make my own kit I suppose, but I did see a couple of kits for the 3.8 for the $300-$400 range so I figured if I could use that and swap in a couple of better sounding mufflers to give it the rumble his used to have I’d be set.
Currently I’m in Northern VA and he’s like a half hour outside of Harrisburg PA so I was hoping to just get everything I would need, then take it up there to get it all installed on a Saturday one day when he’s off next month and not have to make multiple multi-hour trips.
Thanks

my question would be to ask what specifically failed PA inspection before you start throwing parts at it.
if you wanted to do the whole system, start checking rock auto. You could find a new cat / downpipe specific to the GXP and then a catback from any other W body with dual exhaust.

The only practical difference is the GXP has four tailpipes instead of two, which makes it sound much better than the other LS4s and that's it.
As far as function and inspections, the above is exactly correct.

Thanks guys I appreciate the help. I went back through our texts and his answers were as follows:
"Hole in exhaust and dead battery currently lol"
I had to dig a little deeper after that.
"Honestly I think it's just the piece where I had the resonator cut out finally rusted and maybe where the mufflers connect. Although they haven't been long put on so Idk. Course salt country prob doesn't help"
"It's still the original otherwise. All I ever did was put Flowmaster mufflers on and drop the resonator"
So that's about the extent of the info I've had to go off of.
The quote that blew my mind as a Dodge guy:
really hate I ever messed with it since it was a never rust exhaust originally
All I know is rust lol

Thanks for the help guys, when I originally asked the answer I was given was "Hole in exhaust and dead battery currently lol". I dug a little deeper and he followed up with "Honestly I think it's just the piece where I had the resonator cut out finally rusted and maybe where the mufflers connect. Although they haven't been long put on so Idk. Course salt country prob doesn't help....It's still the original otherwise. All I ever did was put Flowmaster mufflers on and drop the resonator." So hopefully you guys are right I can just buy those few pieces and pop them on for him.
